Almad and thousands of other Muslims, taking advantage of a provision of the law in the province of Ontario, can now decide some civil disputes under sharia, including family disagreements and inheritance, business and divorce issues, using tribunals that include imams, Muslim elders and lawyers. While it is less than full implementation of sharia, local leaders consider it a significant step.
Muslim promoters of sharia arbitration said that no cases had been decided but that the process is set. Islamic leaders created an Islamic Court of Civil Justice last fall and that organization, in turn, has chosen arbitrators, who have undergone training in sharia and Canadian civil law, according to organizers and participants.

But critics said they feared that recognizing the tribunals could lead to discrimination, and particular concerns were raised about the rights of Muslim women.
Alia Hogben, a board member of the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, said she opposes the religious tribunals. "It is difficult to speak up because we don't want to feed into anti-Muslim, anti-Islamic stuff that is developing now," she said. "We are religious Muslim women. We don't want to come across as anti-Muslim. On the other hand, we cannot be quiet about something that worries us." We have a superior culture and there are those who flee here for that protection.
I guess Canadians don't see that or have confidence in who they are.

So women whose husbands are treating them like cattle don't go before a regular Canadian family court, but go before a *sharia* court? BIngo. And the intimidation of women and individuals who don't want this but will feel pressured, coerced and even under physical threat will go along with the sharia clause. Disgusting. And the liberal ninnies who use religious freedom ignore and condemn those, particularly women who have breathing emancipated air instead their own BO under their burkas.

They do not accept our laws, hence they cannot be allowed in the US. The citizenship oath specifies that a citizen must have loyalty only to the US, and to obey all US laws. They, by definition, fail to fulfill such prerequisites. Never thought of that.
I agree that we should find a way to prohibit Muslim immigration to our country. It's an ideology bent on the destruction of what we hold dear.

Disgusting.Yes, it will be another drain on the government when safe houses for these women have to be established. Some years ago I listened to a Vietnamese describe the problems that the boat people had, especially the men, when they were brought up for wife-beating. Fortunately for the Vietnamese women, they could look to the law for help. The men were told in no uncertain terms that this was a part of their culture that they had to jettison. Too bad that the Canadians won't do that for these women, but will allow an alien culture to gain standing.

I heard a female white American Boston doctor defend clitorectomy on TV. The usual pieties. How educated, professional and stupid. Condescending, using culture etc as an excuse and implicityly racist, implying that change cannot be made by them.

I'd like to hear her defense if she were the young girl, seized, held down, and mutilated.
I am utterly convinced that Liberalism affects the brain and leads to mental illness. The cognitive dissonance of trying to make those beliefs connect with reality is just too much and causes the rational mechanisms to crash and burn.
Someone should send her some bloody pictures.

You are Americanizing this and assuming that the Muslim 'court' will uphold women's and children's rights. This is a religion that advocates and upholds domestic violence, you really think it's fair for that religion to decide divorce proceedings?

I don't dispute what you are saying here, but the reality is that this could also apply to most religious "arbitration" proceedings in this country -- including those by Mormons, Orthodox Jews, Roman Catholics (to a lesser extent than in earlier times), etc.

A double set of laws....heaven, help us. Oh, don't worry. They'll be working on getting rid of that other set of laws soon.
