FOX’s global warming thriller THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW is turning into a political lightening rod.

A rally featuring former VP and environmental advocate Al Gore will be held a couple of blocks away from the pic’s May 24 preem in Gotham and hosted by MoveOn.org, DAILY VARIETY is reporting on Wednesday.

Helmed by director Roland Emmerich, DAY follows the onset of a new Ice Age just three days after the polar ice caps melt. With Emmerich’s penchant for onscreen destruction, the pic includes catastrophic tornadoes touching down in Los Angeles, giant hail in Tokyo and the flooding and freezing of New York.

VARIETY reporter Gabriel Snyder is planning to quote Gore: “THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW presents us with a great opportunity to talk about the scientific realities of climate change. Millions of people will be coming out of theaters on Memorial Day weekend asking the question, ‘Could this really happen?’ I think we need to answer that question.”

FOX spokeswoman Florence Grace said the pic “is meant to entertain audiences with a mix of spectacle and emotion. If it also increases awareness and inspires audiences to take an interest in some of the issues raised in the film, then all the better.”

Hope this one hasn't been posted yet. This is kind of a pity, really. I was looking forward to this movie, as a general popcorn summer disaster movie. Now, with all the Lib baggage it is accumulating, I am having doubts about whether I want to appear to support their causes.

The basic premise of this idea is: Ice cap melts, dumping huge cap of fresh water into North Atlantic. Huge cap of fresh water doesn't sink like cold salt water does, and thus causes the gulf stream current to "shut down", as one of the major drivers of this current is the huge mass of cooled water which is constantly sinking off the coast of Britain. With the gulf stream shut down, weather patterns change, and the Northern latitudes cool rapidly. According to some, part of the weather change will be a huge world-wide storm system or chain of systems that results in massive destruction. If you include the superstorm, the ice age happens rapidly. If you don't include it, the ice age happens more slowly, developing as the cooled northern latitudes hold their snowpack longer and longer, thus reflecting more and more heat back into space instead of it heating the ground, creating a vicious circle of cooling for the next several thousand years.

Al Gore wrote a book about global warming or some such. As I recall, his book was the only book owned by some guy called the Unabomber, who apparently based much of his beliefs on it and used it (indirectly) as justification for killing scientists.

The Dems are rallying around a fictional movie. In that case, I suggest a conservative rally around Spider-Man 2, which will be much more successful than The Day After Tomorrow, anyway. I'm sure I can come up with some kind of connection between conservatism and the Webhead . . .

It also doesn't contribute signifcantly to tidal waves. And ice ages don't happen in three days.

This is total Barbra Striesand (BS)! Ice packs melt all the time and the fresh water mix's readily with salt water. The north pole would have to melt right away for it to be a fresh water cap. The heat would be so great it would have to be a huge solar nova or a volcano under the north pole. Besides the South pole is land so their cannot be a fresh water cap. Pure fiction for, as Fox admits, entertainment purposes.
