April 28, 2004 -- WASHINGTON - A former manager in the scandal-scarred oil for food program will tell Congress today how top U.N. officials running the program deliberately looked the other way, congressional officials said last night.
Frenchman Michael Soussan, a former program coordinator for the $100 billion fund, is expected to be the star witness of a House International Relations Committee hearing looking into Saddam's gigantic $10.1 billion rip-off.

Who is this Ms. Pletka? She's reading her testimony so fast it's all but meaningless.
To: cake_crumb
Ms Pletka is doing an INCREDIBLE job...UN was aware of these illegal sanctions, Security Council resolution 97 made widespread abuse possible...Egyption contracts padded 23%, ...I think 60% Russian contracts had illegal surcharges...corruptions were common knowledge....Koffy knew...told about corruption he said "why do you care"

Trying to figure out whether Raggle is playing apologist for the Clinton administration....sorta sounds it..."may not have been the right policy choice, but it was the best policy choice possible for two administration" ('course, one of the administrations he means is the one that topples Saddam)

I'm really bad at posting the dialog. Have numerous windows open and multitasking, while also trying to get in some of the highlights on this thread.

"Oil for food cut mortality in half, higher access to medical care, safe drinking water, electricity...It;s difficult to imagine what Iraq would look like today without it..." Um...who got the "safe drinking water? who got the electricity??" "We should have spoken out when the Iraqi government demanded kickbacks. We should have spoken out on these issues, but we did not. We should have spoken out when the Iraqi government threatened our staff. Ironically, I believe the UN became embrioled in this controversy" due to trying not to rock the boat or some such
