Letter to the American Bishops
Our Computer | 4/25/04 | Mrs. don-o

Posted on 04/25/2004 7:40:16 AM PDT by don-o

Dear Bishop,

As you know, last year Senator John Kerry voted to support the Herod-like crime of Partial-Birth Abortion as a legal practice in this country. Unrepentant, he later profaned the Blessed Sacrament at Easter at the Paulist Center in Boston, and then accepted a standing ovation from the congregation at the conclusion of Mass.

You know that the Holy Scriptures teach that God "hates" the deliberate shedding of innocent blood (and no exceptions mentioned, whether it's done by abortion, a bomb, or a baseball bat.)

You know that the Second Vatican Council denounced abortion and infanticide as "abominable crimes."

You know that Canon Law provides for excommunication for procuring an abortion. Bishop Elio Sgreccia, the Vice-President of the Pontifical Academy on Life, a Vatican spokesman on bioethics, holds that politicians who vote for legalized abortion are subject to the canonical penalties for accomplices.

And you Bishops know very well that to receive the Blessed Sacrament unworthily, is to receive it "unto condemnation." To multiply such reception is to multiply the sin of sacrilege.

In any case there is Canon 915: "Those upon whom the penalty of excommunication or interdict has been imposed or declared, and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin, are not to be admitted to Holy Communion."

"Are not to be admitted." How many ways are there to interpret that?

By failing to provide any effective discipline in the case of Catholic politicians who publicly and aggressively promote abominable crimes, the U.S. Catholic Bishops prove that the whole edifice of Bishops' Committees --- and Pastoral Letters --- and Position Papers -- and Banquet Speeches --- and Lip-service to doctrine, line upon line, precept upon precept --- have as their final significance: absolutely nothing.

Bishop _________, there's a reason why Bishops carry the crozier. It's because as "shepherds," you are "armed" with authority to protect the flock and dismay the wolves --- and not the other way around.

But after 30 years of legal slaughter, after over 40 million deaths, you have allowed the Catholic accomplice s to receive the Body of the Lord unrepentant, thus multiplying in their own souls the burden of sacrilege. Aren't you Shepherds to care for people's souls --- even the souls of politicians?

You have delayed the necessary corrective action for decades; for an entire generation; and now you delay again, til your Committee makes a decision, til your Subcommittee issues a statement; til after the next election.

Do you care more about the next election than about the next generation?

It is more likely that a Catholic will be refused Communion for kneeling (when the pastor wishes him to stand) than for authorizing the bloody dismemberment of a helpless child.

For my entire adult life --- and I am 52 years old --- my Sacred Pastors have been dismaying the flock and protecting the wolves.

What will the Good Shepherd say to you, when He returns?

In the name of our dear and suffering Christ,

Good for her, it is an excellent letter.

I have been wondering why this issue of "Bad Catholic" has risen to the surface now, but I suppose it is because JF'inK is running for the top job.

I think it shows how strong an issue the culture wars remain. We cannot lose this war, for common sense is on our side.

This reminds of the poetic line ... "All the King's horses and all the King's men, could not put Humpty Dumpty together again."

Good luck!

My wife is the Roman Catholic. I think she has been hoping against hope, that the bishops would finally do the right thing over this, especially in light of the sex scandals. It's becoming clear that they need a lot of motivation.

I am Christian Orthodox. We share the same general understanding of the Eucharist. And if a bort, such as Mike Dukakis or Olympia Snow presented at a Chalice where I was in attendance, I thin the word to yell is "Unaxios!

Make a scene?

Cause a disturbance?

Damned straight I would!

The Orthodox are no shining stars in this area, at all. But, our influence is minimal compared to the Catholics'. Still, I am going to follow my wife's lead to my bishops.

That is coming up. I am encouraging her to get busy on that very thing. None of our money - not a red cent.

We contribute directly to pro-life and charities who are doing good work.

But, not to the church. To do so, makes us accomplices as well, IMO.

Good letter. With your example, hopefully many other Catholics will contact their Diocese Bishop and will express similar remarks. Likewise, some Bishops will be more understanding than others. It's not only a "culture war" within the secular world, but within the Church as well.

This is the same conclusion I have come to about all "giving". I personally need to know where the $$$$$ are going. That goes for the PTA on down and on up!

This is where you can get the names and addresses of every Catholic Bishop in every Diocese in the USA:

Bishop Addresses

Come on, everybody! Write to the Bishops! Write to your own! Be respectful (please leave off the freeper sarcasm, delightful though it may be), be prayerful, be strong --- insert the names of the pro-abortion politicians in your state, too --- and remind these Bishops of their sworn duty to protect the lambs, the Name of Christ, and the honor of His Church.

#14 compliments of Mrs. don-o.

I do agree. One can be clear and firm w/o vitriol or sarcasm. (I'm not sure that I know how, but she does.)

This is the American Life League's list of all the pro-abortion Catholic politicians state-by-state:

List of Pro-Abort Catholic Politicians .

God bless Judie Brown for compiling this list. Make sure your Bishop knows. And make sure he knows YOU know.

Keep it clean, kids.

This is Mrs. Don-o talking.

My respectful thanks to your good wife. My own archbishop has taken up a position more or less in between St. Louis and Boston. For example, Mary Landrieu, who has voted to permit abortions in US military hospitals, has never been refused, so far as I'm aware.

Rather than continuing protests and prayer vigils outside abortion "clinics", I think it's time Catholics moved their public protests to the front lawns of their own bishops.

Excellent letter!

Let's all join Mrs. don-o in this effort. Perhaps a flood of these letters will jolt some of these 'shepherds' into action.

My bishop is Raymond Burke. He's made his position clear, so I think we in St. Louis can step it up at the clinics.
