STEIN REPORT Friday, April 23 2004 10:26:32 ET
SENATE PANEL DEBATES LOCAL COOPERATION WITH IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT
"Members of a Senate immigration subcommittee split Thursday over a bill by U.S. Sen. Jeff Sessions that would explicitly allow state and local police to arrest or detain people for suspected immigration violations," the AP reports. "With only 2,000 enforcement agents inside the country, federal authorities need help to confront a population of illegal aliens estimated at 10 million, Sessions, R-Mobile, argued at the almost two-hour hearing. That imbalance is a signal that we have no interest in getting a handle on the terrorists coming into our country and no interest in enforcing the laws, he said."

Cool. High time. It shouldn't be necessary.

If the US was really serious about security, it would not treat its border with utter stupidity. Sadly, it will learn when the next terrorist attack was committed by those entering the southern border.

Out in Usenet-Land there's a
thread at alt.politics.immigration about some new bill that's supposed to be introduced next month. Have to wait and see if it's just a rumor or not, but this is the first post:
A major pro-immigration, pro-illegal alien bill is going to be introduced on May 4, 2004 in the US House and Senate. Illegal immigrant support groups are planning a major rally to support the bill.
In the House, the bill will be introduced with the support of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the House Democratic Leadership. Senator Edward Kennedy will introduce the bill in the Senate.
The bill will include the following:
- Family Reunification: makes family reunification more expeditious, reduces backlogs, provides more family visas, makes spouses and minor children "immediate family" and exempts immediate family from the family-based visa ceiling, allowing those waiting more than five years preferences, and repealing three- and ten-year bars to reentry.
- Earned Legalization: grants legal permanent residency status to illegal immigrants, their spouses and minor children who have been living in the U.S. for at least 5 years, worked for an aggregate of 2 years, have no serious criminal record, are not a security risk, and "are committed" to learning English and civics.
- Enhanced Temporary Worker Program: Creates a temporary worker program that allows a limited number of temporary visas with visa portability, and provides a path to eventual citizenship for those that choose it.
Although this information has not reached the news media, it can be confirmed by calling Senator Kennedy's office.

I got an e-mail from NumbersUSA about this.
S. 1906, the Homeland Security Enhancement Act of 2003 is the bill and it already has about 120 co-sponsors in the House.

Its getting awfully hard for the government to ignore this problem. Whether they'll do the right thing is yet to be seen.

"If the US was really serious about security, it would not treat its border with utter stupidity." You're absolutely right about that. Sadly, when it comes to dealing with illegals, politics trumps security...AND the will of the people, and that's true of both Republicans and democRATs.

Looks like there is going to be a collision in Congress.
Although this information has not reached the news media, it can be confirmed by calling Senator Kennedy's office.
It figures Kennedy would be in on the pro-illegal alien scam/bill.

If the US was really serious about security ...it would enlist and train a citizens militia to patrol the border day and night, with the full power of arrest.

By its terms, it sounds like what Bush was proposing a few months ago.

sounds like what Bush was proposing a few months agoYeah, it does. I'm going to keep an eye on Sen. Ted's website and see if there's any mention of him introducing it. If it's announced on May 4th, then it'll be a fitting prelude to Cinco de Mayo.
