McGreevey: Church wrong to dictate to Catholic politicians

The Church is to rebuke sinning members of the church. If a Catholic politician is flouting church teaching (especially Biblical teaching), then he is transgressing. As a public leader he is especially accountable and to be judged more strictly for his transgressions. Besides, if he's a real Catholic, his responsibility is to the Church first and secular society second. If he can't live with this, then he should officially leave the Church because he has certainly already abandoned it by being disobedient.

His language is revealing, and here in lies the problem. The governor clearly advocates that all people should support the dictates he and his fellow politicos define as sacred (in this case "abortion rights"), while simultaneously rejecting all authoritative interpretations of God's law.

It's such good news that the Catholic Church is finally standing for something and putting some muscle into it. The next step is to excommunicate the baby killers.

Carl Cameron, on Fox News tonight, mentioned that every poll shows that among Catholics - and most religions - those who go to church regularly vote Republican and those who don't (Catholics in name only) vote DemocRAT.

Right. I went to 6 years of Catholic school and am well aware. I'm also aware of the fact that, if every Catholic lined up every Saturday to confess their sins, priest would do nothing but hear confessions 24/7 to keep up. Since that does not occur and many Catholics are lapse in their confessions, there are therefore many false Catholics.



Maybe not as many false Catholics as you think. That's why we have "communal penance". God knows your heart, even better than you do.

THe UK Guardian did a piece on the new Vatican guidelines and it made a similar faux paus - "Catholics symbolically recieve the body of Christ at Comunion" or some similar silly distortion of what is actually a very very very simple belief:

we receive the actual "body, blood, soul and divinty" of Christ when we receive Communion

He just must be STOOPID to not see the contradiction in that statement.

I saw a MA politician yesterday saying that he took an oath to uphold the Constitution, so he HAS to support abortion. WRONG! He has the right, as does every citizen, to work against things in the Constitution with which he disagrees. I guess if he were in Government in the 1850's he would have felt as though he HAD to support the Dred-Scott decision as well.

McGreevey, however, insisted that his support of abortion rights is a matter of conscience and that church teaching has long backed individuals who followed their own conscience when making moral choices.

That's the 'Jesuit line' so popular among politicians. The Church ACTUALLY teaches that all Catholics must create an INFORMED conscience so that they will know what is sinful and what is not. They can can then CHOOSE the sinful route, but they will know that there will be consequences. McGreevy knows that supporting abortion is sinful, yet he continues to do so publicly. Because of this he's causing confusion and scandal among Catholics in NJ. For that reason alone, he should abstain from Communion.

I'm glad Cardinal Arinze spoke out so forcefully about it. He's not popular with the libs anyway. I think they're scared that he might be the next Pope. They are so hoping to get someone less 'rigid' than JPII.

Does the Bishop in charge of the Newark Diocese have jurisdiction over the happenings at Seton Hall? This was a week ago Friday, but someone at SHU still needs to be corrected. I find this is outrageous for a university that claims a "Catholic Tradition" - and I'm not even Catholic.
