The original "assault rifle". Lots of links in this article.

Beautiful.
I believe I saw one of those at a WWII Memorial event at the Atlanta History Center.
They had just about every WWII rifle (Soviet, American, British, German, Japanese) there.
Also, about the worst war time rifle ever built was a French rifle used in WWI...I forget its name.

Might you be referring to the LMG 'Chauchat'? That was pretty bad, from what I have heard.

Yeah, that's it. It had a big rectangular hole on the side, which filled up with dirt and other debris, making the gun inoperable after very little use.
It got to the point where American doughboys just threw theirs away. It was more of a liability than a help.

An intriguing addition was the Krummerlauf, a bent barrel with a periscope sighting device for shooting around corners.This sounds only marginally more dangerous to the target than to the user.

So the Russians copied this for their AK-47?

Also, the semicircular magazine on the Chauchat would work itself loose during operation. This meant that you had to hold it on place while firing. It was more useful as a club.

OK, 45 ... here's the challenge;
Just as we have the Freeper Canteen, howzabout a weekly article deescribing one weapon at a time.
I think a lot of us that have only one or two guns, and that's all we know about, would appreciate data on other guns ... long and short ...
Maybe we could/would add to our 'museum'.

It was made by the French. How could one expect anything other than an inferior weapon that gives the enemy an advantage?

Wow...I've never seen one preserved so perfectly. Other than the missing white flag, it looks 100% complete!!!

Shouldn't that be "le drapeau blanc?" Just kidding. It is no surprise that so many Chauchats are intact - if ya don't use it, it doesn't get dirty...
