WASHINGTON, April 21 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Hundreds, or thousands, of assault weapons headed to American neighborhoods? Try hundreds of thousands.
"Press reports say a shipment of deadly assault weapons bound for Georgia was intercepted in Italy yesterday. That's terrible," said Michael Barnes, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March. "But unless President Bush acts, come Sept. 14 there will be need to illegally smuggle assault weapons into our country. They will be legally made right here in the U.S.A."
The landmark 1994 assault weapons ban that outlawed Uzis and AK-47s (like the ones reportedly seized yesterday) expires Sept. 13. The U.S. Senate showed on March 2 that it could pass a renewal of the law, but unless President Bush tells the House of Representatives that he wants the law renewed it will expire.
Executives of the Israeli company that makes Uzis said publicly last year that they were excited about the U.S. market reopening for assault weapons. And though a ban on importation of the weapons would remain law, Uzi officials said they were strongly considering building a plant in the U.S.
Thousands of American moms and others are descending on Washington D.C. May 9 to demand that President Bush "halt the assault" on the safety of America's children. The Mother's Day March to Halt the Assault will be the kickoff of a four-month campaign to save the assault weapons law. Go to http://www.mmm2004.com for more information on the march activities.

Yeeeehaaaaw! America's neighborhood are about to be safer! Think of it. What criminal will want to creep through neighborhoods where the homeowners may be armed with "assault weapons". He'd get his a** shot off! So he's gonna stay away, concentrate his efforts in liberal neighborhoods, like Cambridge, Mass.
You are misinformed. There were full auto machine guns for sale at the last 2 gun shows I attended in Utah. The problem is that I didn't have $14,000 to buy one. The ATF effectively prevented sales of machine guns manufactured after 1986. Older ones can be purchased, but the number of functional units decreases over time. That increases prices dramatically.
If I wanted to purchase a Class III machine gun, I would need to fill out a form and get my local sheriff to sign off. A $200 tax must be paid to the ATFE. The permit issued must be kept with the firearm.
Even though I could purchase a machine gun, the cost of feeding the beast doesn't fit in my budget. None of my local gun shops are interested in the extra hassle that comes with being a Class III FFL.
If you want to experience firing a machine gun, you can visit many indoor ranges nearby the Dallas/Ft Worth airport. Likewise, there are some ranges around Las Vegas that cater to people who like to fire a full magazine or belt-fed beastie.
Yeah, have Bush tell 'em. Constituents be damned!
And these assholes wonder why they are called un-American.
The statement is just plane false! The "Assault weapons ban" did not outlaw Uzis and AK-47's. It outlawed things that looked like Uzis and AK-47's. Fully automatic Uzis and AK-47's are controlled firearms and illegal in most states and restricted by other federal statutes.
The "assault weapons ban" was about those that want to outlaw guns starting with firearms that "look evil," and that some were afraid could be converted from legal semi-automatic rifles to illegal fully automatic rifles.
Of course the metal working skills required to convert the semi-auto to a fully auto were not much more than would be required to make a WW2 European home-made resistance fighters Sten submachine gun.
Again, the ban is about high capacity magazines, firearms that look like they are assault weapons, and baning some semi-automatic rifles because they don't look like grandpa's deer rifle.
Uh, there were already millions of semi-automatics in public hands before the AWB - this unconstitutional POS merely outlawed the future sale of those manufactured after 9/13/94 which had certain cosmetic features. The old guns weren't made illegal to own, merely more valuable due to the artificial limitation in supply. Oh, and several hundred thousand functionally-identical firearms have been sold to the public each year since '94 - they merely lack such "deadly" features as bayonet lugs, folding stocks or pistol grips. These Brady Bunch types really need to get ahold of the FACTS. The simplest fact is that there are more vastly more semi-auto guns with military features on them in public hands than in '94, yet the crime rate has dropped significantly: thus, the limitation on supply has had NO EFFECT on crime!
Executives of the Israeli company that makes Uzis said publicly last year that they were excited about the U.S. market reopening for assault weapons. And though a ban on importation of the weapons would remain law, Uzi officials said they were strongly considering building a plant in the U.S.
Wouldn't this help to reverse the "outsourcing" of jobs? If so, the libs ought to be in favor of it, not against it. Oh, that's right, it involves letting the proles have guns, so they're against it no matter what.
Bring on the Uzis - I've always wanted one, and in about 5 months I may even be able to afford it.
More jobs for hardworking Americans.
I'm willing to bet that no one has been bayoneted in a liqueur store heist since 1994. (Or before for that matter)
