Cheney Reaffirms Bush Against Abortion

WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney reaffirmed the Bush administration's staunch opposition to abortion Tuesday, saying the issue was a nonpartisan question of protecting the "weakest members of our society."

"It doesn't matter if you're Republican or Democrat, liberal or conservative, male or female, black or white, ... north or south, east or west, all that matters is your respect for the claim of every life," Cheney said in a 10-minute speech to the National Right to Life Committee Educational Trust Fund.

"To be part of this cause is to believe that every mother carrying a life, that every child waiting to be born deserves understanding," he said.

Cheney's remarks come as abortion rights advocates plan a protest rally Sunday that they hope will fuel voter anger at President Bush and his anti-abortion platform.

Bush supports abortion only in cases of rape or incest when a woman's life is endangered. He also signed two pieces of legislation since November designed to restrict a procedure critics call "partial-birth abortions" and endow legal rights to an embryo or fetus distinct from the mother.

Bush's Democratic rival, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, voted against the partial-birth ban and said he would nominate only Supreme Court justices who support abortion rights.

In his speech, Cheney praised the two pieces of anti-abortion legislation as "historic action" to extend protections to the "weakest members of our society" and reaffirmed the administration's opposition to cloning.

He vowed that the Bush administration would "confidently and vigorously" defend the partial-birth ban.

"President Bush has often expressed his commitment that in a compassionate society, every child be welcomed in life," Cheney said. "America still has some distance to travel before that hope is realized."

The choice [pun intended] this November is quite clear.

"Pro-choice" has nothing to do with having a "choice" -- we always have choices that we can make -- it is that they want the freedom to choose evil without consequence.

Kerry would only nominate judges who are pro-murder, huh? It's sure nice seeing his concern for the greater percentage of Americans opinions isn't it? Gives you a warm fuzzy feeling that we could have someone as smart and special looking out for us doesn't it.

And thank you, Mr. Vice President.

It pisses me off every time a FReeper suggests that the pro-abortion Condoleeza Rice should replace Cheney. Cheney is a fine man and his health is not a concern. He visits the doctor regularly and brings an exercise bike with him on all trips.

I have never yet seen a frontal, specific, detailed statement by Dr. Rice on her position in re. abortion. What she has said concerns me. She's a very impressive person in most known respects; I hope this isn't an area where her Christian background and rational mind has completely failed her.

And it does also concern me when FReepers scream "Rice for President!" without knowing her position on this issue.

Dan Condi used the terms "mildly pro-choice" and "reluctantly pro-choice," (whatever that means) to describe herself before Karl Rove told her to can it. Now she ducks this issue.

Approximately two years ago, I heard Condaleeza Rice in an interview discussing her role in the administration. The interviewer asked her if she had any major policy differences with President Bush. She replied they were in lockstep agreement on foreign affairs and defense issues, but were miles apart on the abortion issue, as she was unequivocally "pro-choice."

I share the sentiment completely, and have protested loudly every time I've seen it here for a long time.

FReepers should know better.

Hope post 11 is incorrect, or she's re-thought. There simply is no defense for a pro-abort position.

Yesterday a Freeper said "Mr. Bush is the worst president ever: for Americas ENEMIES"

I'd like to edit that today to "Mr. Bush is the worst president ever: for Planned Parenthood"

Great. If only you had the guts to apply that thinking to the Pennsylvania primary, Mr. Vice President.
