I saw this last night and wondered if Timmerman would get the same kind of exposure as Richard Clarke.
I will be surprised if comments appear here on FR, that any of the leftist media covered this story.

If this is true, and I suspect it is, then why we continue to maintain even a façade of friendship with France, or at least with its current regime, is utterly beyond me. They may not be enemies, but they are no more friends than are, say, the communist Chinese. We should treat them no better. Block them at every opportunity.

Slack-jawed. Powell's jaw dropped to the floor, is the way it was described to me by one of his confidant, somebody who was there.

Powell is a naive dupe. His role in these affairs has been really irritating.

- He was the one who insisted we go to the UN in the first damn place. We had no obligation to do so and Bush had every authority to attack Iraq at any point but Noooo, Give the UN a chance says Powell.

- Going to the UN meant that these legalistic arguments over "WMD" were moved to the forefront. The War Powers authorization did not depend crucially on Saddam having "WMD" or not but "WMD" was the only way for us to "bring Saddam up on charges" (so to speak) before the UN, so we did. Thus making it seem (to casual observers, as well as lefties and other imbeciles) as if the ENTIRE reason for the war was to wage a "WMD raid" on the country of Iraq. Which is and always was ridiculous of course. But now that none have been found, our credibility is shot to hell. It didn't have to be so. (We did NOT invade Iraq to raid and confiscate their "WMD"s!!)

- The prolonged international/UN debate gave Saddam time to hide/move his stuff. Bush was ready to go in late 2002 but Noooo let's go to the UN and have arguments with Dominique de Fou-fou Villepin for four months first. I'm sure Saddam will cooperate and keep all his banned materials precisely where they are! says Powell.

- The prolonged international/UN debate left our troops stewing and twiddling thumbs in Kuwait and elsewhere. How much did Powell want our troops' morale to sink, exactly, before ordering them to invade Iraq?

- Then, oh so helpfully, after all this crap, Powell has always been one of the "WMD doubters" war opponents would point to. To reiterate: he forced us to go to the UN; this limited our case to "WMD"; meanwhile giving Saddam all the time in the world to hide/move "WMD"; but he's the "conscience" of the administration in having reservations about the "WMD" basis for the war.

I really dislike this guy. His only value was as a kind of prop. The fact that he is actually listened to has caused damage to our country.

I'm afraid they are more than cynical......they might have cost a few lives.

TIMMERMAN: Well, Villepin says this in January. He's saying this all along. This was their message all along, but what Chirac also says in October, he says, I'm going to send over one of my top generals to Tampa, Florida, to the United States Central Command to work out the details of how we include French forces in a U.S.-led coalition.

They weaseled their way into CENTCOM so the bastards could feed info to Saddam.

Does anyone remember if this coincides with that brief press appearance President Bush and Powell made when the President said the game is over? I sort of remember it as having been a hastily called appearance that reflected much more behind the scenes activity than was shared.

Being liars is the least of France's problem...
Being a liar and corrupt back stabbing bastard, is the least of Chiraq's problem..

The French, knowing this should be repulsed..
They are not...
THAT is France's biggest problem...

This story will get little play outside "fair and balanced" news outlets.

In addition, it will be interesting to see the media coverage (spin) on the UN's oil for food program. All of the money flowed through a single French bank, which as of a few weeks ago was not cooperating with investigators and refused to release transaction records.

The irony of it all is that their beloved Arabic friends will be the ones that eventually will slit their throats before the French even have a chance to surrender in their traditional manner....

No doubt France is our enemy, Kerry is a pathological liar. Anyone doubting the OPEC countries are aginst Bush needs to have their heads examined. They fear Bush becuase they have been able to control the Democrats with all the money they flow into the US.
Clintons Budhist Temple deal is small in comparison to what the Democrats take from foreign lobbyist.

Dolphy it fits the timeframe.

I wonder what happened between Jan 19-20,2003 and when Bush made those comments on Feb 6,2003.

Within weeks of being inaugurated, I will return to the U.N., and I will literally, formally rejoin the community of nations and turnover a proud new chapter in America's relationship with the world.

Somebody help me out here. Are liberals really energized by this kind of line? To me, it sounds like a freaking nightmare, but how do liberals see this kind of proposal?

I mean, I know that lots of them hate America, and they want us to stop our leadership in the world. But are they actually energized about the UN? Do they really think the UN has good ideas and good people and the kind of competence needed to do good in the world? It's hard for me to believe anyone could be so wrong.
