It was only a few weeks ago that French Ambassador Jean-David Levitte was in the offices of the Rocky Mountain News attempting to rehabilitate his country's image by making sophisticated excuses for its coddling of Saddam Hussein.
Since the war began, Levitte has been a tireless advocate for President Jacques Chirac. If not writing in the op-ed pages of major U.S. newspapers, he is traveling, making his case at conferences, meetings and on college campuses, but always with essentially the same message: The differences between the United States and France over Iraq are not deep, and charges of a French doublecross are absolutely baseless.
Yet if the bilateral relationship is really on the mend, why has the ambassador's message become more shrill and confrontational?

Hit them where it hurts, the pocketbook!
1) Bilateral trade in goods
a) Trends, 1992-2002: The U.S. records a growing deficit
Bilateral trade between France and the United States increased 150 percent during this period, reaching $47 billion in 2002; this increase corresponded to a similar growth in imports and exports.
France exports $28 billion worth of goods and imports $19 billion worth of American products. The U.S. bilateral trade deficit has increased steadily since 1992, reaching a peak of $10.4 billion in 2001 before decreasing last year.
