Human nature constantly seeks to transcend its own limitations. Some of civilization's greatest accomplishments -- one modern example being aerial flight -- have been produced by this effort. Still, each of us realizes our bodies cannot fly unassisted by machines. If we don't recognize this reality, we are likely to wind up committed to the funny farm.
Yet when it comes to irrational utopian political ideas, there seems to be no similar awareness of the difference between wishful fantasy and reality. Reading John Kerry's latest critique of our government's Iraq policy demonstrates the imperviousness of such fantasies when confronted with real world evidence. One wonders what planet Mr. Kerry dwells on when he argues, with an apparently straight face:"...the administration must make the United Nations a full partner responsible for developing Iraq's transition to a new constitution and government..." As if our our problems in Iraq are due to our failure to make the U.N. (the same U.N. whose functionaries fled at the first signs of trouble) our full partners!
The United Nations as described by John Kerry, is the perfect embodiment of contemporary liberalism's detachment from reality. The planet Kerry dwells on is the planet of wishful thinking rather reality -- one of perfection, of human beings freed from irrational desire and living in perpetual harmony, solving problems amicably through peaceful dialogue in an ideology-free international organization bereft of political intrigue or national self-interest (wishful thinking to the max!).
Yet, no one gets committed to a mental hospital for advocating this kind of utopian dream of a perfect egalitarian world, even though the experience of the last century has taught us that this kind of fantasist socialist thinking ultimately only brings misery to millions and is simply unattainable by real-life human beings. Call it the madness (or psychopathology) of everyday liberal life. Such beautiful dreams are regarded by contemporary liberals not as symptoms of madness, but as evidence of the nobility of those who dream such inspired but ultimately destructive fantasies.
Today liberal utopians speak of the U.N. as if it were not the utterly corrupt organization it has become in the years since its idealistic founding in the middle of the last century. Therefore, don't expect the John Kerrys of the world to notice and condemn the corruption of the UN's oil-for-palaces program -- a Mafia-like scam responsible for countless innocent dead Iraqis and countless wealthy U.N. intermediaries. After all, the UN was too busy skimming off oil profits and passing resolutions condemning Israel to actually do something useful in ending the holocaust-like genocide in Rwanda, for example. And so what if Palestinian children are being fitted out with bomb belts for the purpose or murdering innocent Israeli civilians; the UN has important things to do--like holding conferences to equate the liberation movement of the Jewish people, Zionism, with racism, and installing Libya as head of its Human Rights committee. Yet, all while the UN increasingly becomes a forum for tyrants promoting hatred of Jews and America, liberal wishful thinkers like John Kerry speak of it as an admirable, rather than criminal, organization that can confer legitimacy on our coalition efforts to bring democracy and human rights to Iraq........
