More like if Clinton had blamed it on radical pro-lifers, i.e. people who really had nothing to do with it. McVeigh was at least a radical right-winger, while he probably wasn't Limbaugh-driven.

> The appeasement is complete now.. Not quite. This is just the first step.
Step 2: Al Q demands the release of all the terrorists awaiting trial.
Step 3: Al Q demands the release of all muslims in Spanish jails.
I agree completely. Add: AQ Demands money

Actually, everything looked like ETA - which had tried to carry off just such a train bombing twice within the two months prior to March 11, and had been caught trying to bring 1,500 pounds of dynamite into Madrid the very weekend before. All of the verifiable information was released as it came in and the actual bombers (or at any rate, the group) were identified within 12 hours.
What happened was that the Spanish media, which is just as anti-Aznar as ours is anti-Bush, began releasing leaks from the police investigation and just flat out rumors ("suicide bombers," etc., although of course there were none). After AQ's message telling Spain to surrender, the Socialists swung into action and within no time at all the aftermath of the bombings became a giant political rally and it was all focused on Iraq. There were even attacks upon PP (Aznar's party) headquarters and the usual street demonstrations that the left likes to substitute for rational argument.
Prior to the attack, Iraq had dropped into the background and was no longer really considered a major issue in the election at that point. Many Spaniards were even proud of Spain's international role.
What you had was carefully manipulated hysteria. I think it could easily happen here, too.
BTW, everybody, please remember that more than 10 million Spaniards did NOT vote for Zapatero, and are probably even more upset than we are about this.

yes, he made the promise before March 11th. He'd be doing it anyway. And I heard too about the AQ demands to leave Afghanistan, and it seems there'll be no withdrawal for the moment. I also heard on the radio that Zapatero plans to offer non combat troops to the US during his visit to DC next week.

"Al-Qaeda has asked Spain to withdraw the troops from Afghanistan and nobody in Spain has paid the slightest attention"
Yet.
Just wait until (God forbid) Al-Gayda attacks Spain again, to underline their demands regarding Spanish forces in Trashcanistan. You'll see people screaming and soiling themselves for Spain to get out of there, too.

"The terroist attack may have galvanised the opposing position, but this is NOT a case of people tucking tail and running. It's democracy in action. Something we're SUPPOSED to cherish in the U.S."
I can summarize your position as follows: it's not cowardice to run from an enemy as long as everyone votes to run before hand.

The new Spanish government wants their troops home so they could ponder more "important" things in life like why Real Madrid's Becks cheated on Posh.

Jimbo,
Have you noticed how many folks speak Spanish in the Western Hemisphere?
Not to mention here in Nashville....I'd wager Colonial Spain is worthy of at least an honorable mention in western civilization.
