THE NATION FOR ARLEN

The Nation, a far-left magazine that still believes Alger Hiss innocent, seldom speaks well of any Republican. Yet its just-released May 3rd issue carries an article "Election Matters: The GOP Hunts Its Own" which bluntly backs Pennsylvania's Republican Senator, Arlen Specter, for reelection. Why does The Nation love Arlen so?
[I]n a closely divided Senate, Specter's tendency to side with liberals on social issues, as well as his willingness to challenge the worst excesses of the right on judicial nominations, tax cuts, the minimum wage, school choice and tort reform, has made him a Republican that Democrats can deal with. ... But if Republicans maintain control of the Senate after November, Specter and a handful of other renegade GOPers, ranging from Rhode Island's very nearly liberal Lincoln Chafee to conservatives with maverick streaks like Arizona's John McCain and Ohio's George Voinovich, could be the only roadblocks to right-wing hegemony.
Stephen Moore's warning in NRO to Senator Specter's Republican friends looks more prescient than ever. Both The Nation and The New Yorker have stated that Arlen Specter is the best choice for Pennsylvania Republicans. Pennsylvania Republicans have now been warned.

This Pennsylvanian is voting for Pat Toomey.
Arlen brags about his clout. Clout with which party, though?
Bush's policy of endorsing incumbent republicans has to go. Specter's using W's endorsement in all of his ads.

So "the Nation' follows the same "golden rule" as President Bush and Senator Santorum?...
Always Endorse the Incumbent
Pffffft!!!

Sweet. I'm making calls to registered PA Repubs tomorrow for Toomey. I can remind people not supporting Toomey (yet) that The Nation is pro Specter.

Both The Nation and The New Yorker have stated that Arlen Specter is the best choice for Pennsylvania RepublicansAnd the unions have been encouraging democrats to register as republicans to vote for Specter in the primary!
Sad thing about this scenario is that when Specter loses on Apr 27 he will still collect the same paycheck as a retired senator as he does as a (ahem) working senator.

What statistical chances does this challenger have? Any challenger? Anywhere in this country? A challenger to your local dog catcher? The game, the illusions, continue...

Does The Nation really like Arlen Specter?
Or are they endorsing him in the hopes that their endorsement will hurt him in the GOP primary, helping to elect Pat Toomey?
The guys at The Nation aren't totally stupid. They know that Joe Hoefell (the Dem candidate) stands an even, if not better, chance against Toomey than against Specter.

If you guys don't throw him out, I'll boycott Hershey forever! You'll rank right up there with my boycott of Canada!!

No, they know Specter can beat the Dem, and they know they risk getting another Sanotorum, so they are pulling out the stops.
They also know Specter will tow the line on judicial nominees - their Holy Grail.

Time for a RINO hunt. Bump!
Is Arlen Specter a Republican? Vote "not proven" on Tuesday, April 27.
Pat Toomey for Senate!

I'm still wondering why Limbaugh had Spectre on his show. What a crock.
