A holy war of sorts is heating up in a Detroit suburb, where members of the local Muslim community want loudspeakers on mosques to announce the Islamic call to prayer five times each day.

But the idea is running into opposition from other residents of Hamtramck, Mich., many of whom are Christian, who think the prayer calls as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m. would be disruptive.

"When you call to prayer, you are proselytizing, and as a citizen of the United States I don't want to hear it," Bob Golen, 68, told the Detroit Free Press.

"It is not my God. My God is Jesus Christ," Caroline Zarski, 81, said. "I don't want this noise invading my home at 10 p.m."

The Al-Islah Islamic Center asked the city three months ago to alter its noise ordinance to allow the calls to prayer. In February, the council reportedly supported the change but sought a public hearing before making any change.

"We don't want to make it a big deal," said businessman Abdul Algazali, according to the Free Press. "It's a low-pitched voice. It's not going to wake up anybody."

I am not a racist. I have nothing at all against Christian or non-sectarian Arabs. I am just totally fed up with wild-eyed frikkin Muslims and the other quieter Muslims who secretly smile and nod at the wild-eyed ones who kill my fellow Americans.

You did not read the answer you critiqued, what the writer does not want is anyone's religion proselityzing from a loud speaker - three times daily!!!!

First, that's five times daily -- don't you know anything about Islam?

Second, the context of her message suggested she wouldn't mind this if it were her own religion making the noise.

But the real problem is that any religion would be appoved to use loud speakers on a continuous manner to "shout" to anyone within hearing range, their "prayers".

I'm right there with you on this and think it shouldn't be allowed, and think that it was a stupid thing to ask for in the first place (and not very neighborly). But I was against the law pushed by Christians that allowed religious exemptions to local ordinances.

Now you've switched subjects to other practices of religions. We were talking about how both Islam and Christianity prey on weak, ignorant people.

Absolutely not. It's a call to prayer, period. And one of the basics of America is freedom of religion. So I see no problem with it, except for the noise pollution.

A friend of mine when he was in high school got some of his buddies to break into the local church around midnight one Saturday night. The church had a phonograph, a loud speaker and a record of church bells which they played every Sunday morning. They got into the church, fired up the speakers and put on Fats Domino singing "Yesiree I'm in Love Again". They got out of there just in time as the one-man police force came careening around the corner.

I use to feel the same, but you just cant trust a muslim. Not until all sleeper cells are found and terrorists killed.

In the meantime, if the muslimes succeed in getting their prayers over loudspeakers, all freedom loving citizens should put speakers on top of their cars, and circle around thses mosques playing christian, buddist, whatever kind of music and/or prayers and DROWN THEIR godless RELIGION UNIL IT IS DEAD!

I have never heard church bells ringing at ten oclock at night, and whats more there is a big diff between bells and and preaching over a loudspeaker, if it was in my neighborhood I would be pissed off enough to call the police for these stinky winkies disturbing my peace.

Burkha = Misogynistic Mobile Women's Prison

I bear witness that there is no other object of worship but Allah.
I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
Come to prayer.
Come to Success.
Allah is Greatest.
There is no other object of worship but Allah.

Replace "Allah/Mohammed" with "God/Jesus" and you're not far from your average Christian prayer.
