LAW OF THE LAND (Will you wake up to Islamic prayer call?)

A holy war of sorts is heating up in a Detroit suburb, where members of the local Muslim community want loudspeakers on mosques to announce the Islamic call to prayer five times each day.

But the idea is running into opposition from other residents of Hamtramck, Mich., many of whom are Christian, who think the prayer calls as early as 6 a.m. and as late as 10 p.m. would be disruptive.

"When you call to prayer, you are proselytizing, and as a citizen of the United States I don't want to hear it," Bob Golen, 68, told the Detroit Free Press.

"It is not my God. My God is Jesus Christ," Caroline Zarski, 81, said. "I don't want this noise invading my home at 10 p.m."

The Al-Islah Islamic Center asked the city three months ago to alter its noise ordinance to allow the calls to prayer. In February, the council reportedly supported the change but sought a public hearing before making any change.

"We don't want to make it a big deal," said businessman Abdul Algazali, according to the Free Press. "It's a low-pitched voice. It's not going to wake up anybody."

I hope I posted this correctly, found it in my local paper (Odessa American) But had to go elsewhere to find the link.

Worldnetdaily has an opinion poll on this on the link provided, another article appears in the Detroit Free Press, but I could not copy it (probably my error)

The problem is that church bells are carillons, but the moslem call to prayer is actually prayers broadcast over public space.

If moslems wish to use carillons to call to prayer that would be acceptable, but not broadcast prayer.

Nope.

This is not an islamic country, despite what you want it to be. Not yet at least.

Your translation is not a translation at all. It's just a lie. She doesn't want her home invaded by the noise of a violent, misogynystic death cult.

Your continued anti-Christian sentiments expressed on the FR tell me you probably would not want to hear Christian songs blasted through your windows either. So lighten up and with with the lies and specious arguments and straw men.

islam is not a religion. It's a political cult.

I dont think so. You see, WHY should a christian be FORCED to listen to muslime prayer calls? The only thing wrong with this mans statement, is it is not PC enough for liberals!

I myself dont want muslime horns waking me up, or disturbing the peace at all hours.

Hope not. But if I do, it will only be once.

"Translation: I'm all for freedom of religion as long as it's mine."

You need a new translator.

Count me in that group too. I don't want to hear Muslim/Christian/Buddhist/Jewish/WTFever music or prayers blared loudly in my neighborhood.

Nor gangsta rap, 80s metal, alternative, opera, classical, etc.

Give me peace and quiet over people thinking they know what's best for me to hear, since those people are wrong 100% of the time anyways.

and their taste in music usually sucks.

I wish for the day when we can all stop playing word games and stop pretending islam is a religion. The truth is islam is a cult that preys on the weak and REALLY ignorant.

I find it creepy that a "religion" has mandatory prayer times. I'm so use to turning to Jesus in prayer whenever I need to, I guess I'm spoiled.

What is the islamic god doing the rest of the day? Watching camel-dung ball on a big screen at Sports City?

Personally I think this should fall under the noise laws and not be allowed. I don't care whose religion it is or if it's not even related to religion, nobody has business blaring anything over loudspeakers at 6am every day.

But as I've said on another thread about this, Christians may in the end have forced this upon themselves if the Muslims use the RFRA to make the city allow them to do this.

I wonder if the Indians are saying that about church bells.
