Then when that is shot out of the water, they immediatly start talking about evasion and "cheating" -- as if this never, ever happens under the income tax. It happens, but it would be much easier under a consumption tax. On the low end, it would be rife, IMO. Particularly on services.

Say you're buying a new set of tires - $250. If you evade the tax on this single transaction, you save $75. The reward of evasion is very great compared to the chance you'd get caught in this single act.
