WOMEN'S GROUPS SEEK ENTRY TO PRESIDENT'S INNER CIRCLE; GORELICK CONSIDERED FOR CIA

President Clinton faces a choice as he returns this week to the business of staffing his administration for a second term: He will either make history by appointing a woman to one of the top spots on his national security team, or risk sorely disappointing many of the very voters who provided his margin of victory in last month's election.


This ambivalence is playing itself out in the drama over whether Clinton will name U.N. Ambassador Madeleine K. Albright to be the first female secretary of state. While declining to make Albright's appointment a litmus test for Clinton, top women's advocates said they would regard it as a setback if Clinton does not name a woman to one of several vacancies in top national security jobs that historically have been the province of white men.


"It would be a real blow, and it would be fairly blatant," given how Clinton ran as an advocate for women, said Patricia Ireland, president of the National Organization for Women. "Foreign policy is a place where women really do need to make some breakthroughs."


Besides Albright, the woman cited most frequently by administration officials as likely for a top national security job is Deputy Attorney General Jamie S. Gorelick, who is being considered for CIA director.

9-11 Commissioner and Janet Reno’s former Girl Friday, Jamie Gorelick is the center of a swirling controversy that threatens to discredit the entire proceeding of the 9-11 Commission.

In the latest development, Crushkerry.com has produced a new video, which itemizes the charges against Gorelick and openly questions her suitability to serve on the commission. Crushkerry.com also asks viewer to sign a petition to force Gorelick to testify before her own commission.

Earlier in the week, Crushkerry.com issued an open letter to the 9-11 Commission asking them to call four more vital witnesses before they adjourn.

At issue a number of troubling charges of conflict of interest and some obvious partisan behavior on the part of Janet Reno’s ex-cohort.

Specifically, Gorelick’s law firm Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering represents 9-11 defendant Prince Mohammed al Faisal in the suit by the victims’ families. This obviously provides an important motive for Gorelick’s efforts to blame George W. Bush personally for that tragic day, rather than the terrorists and their financiers.

Moreover, as the proceedings have demonstrated, Gorelick is simply too partisan to remain objective. Many believe she is the source of steady leaks to the press. And in a new development, Cushkerry.com has learned Gorelick has given over $60,000 to Democrat candidates and causes in recent years, including $2,000 to Kerry for President, the maximum allowed under the law.

As Attorney General John Ashcroft revealed in his dramatic testimony before the commission, Gorelick was in fact the author of some of the policies that made it easier for terrorists to plot and kill Americans.

Yesterday, Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) called on Gorelick to step down from the commission, citing some of the same reasons Crushkerry.com does in their video.

Commissioner Gorelick should resign her seat on the commission and take a seat at the witness table. You as Chairman of this important commission have a duty to ensure that the work you've done and the millions of dollars you've spent isn't wasted. Any report which you produce in conjunction with Commissioner Gorelick will be deamed tainted by atleast half this country.

Your own credibility is on the line.

Jamie Gorelick should resign or be removed from the 9/11 Commission. If the Commission's stated purpose is to discover exactly what went wrong, and what can be done going forward, to fix the issues found by the Commission, Ms. Gorelick's continued presence on the Commission is a hindrance to that goal.

I ask that a statement be provided to the public advising if she had advised the Commission of her authoring and distributing the memo from 1995 before the existence of that memo was revealed by AG Ashcroft. If she did not mention the memo, she should be removed for concealing evidence.

Please advise her to remove herself from the 9/11 Commission to maintain at least the appearance of the 9/11 Commission's ability to conduct an impartial investigation.

My letter to the commission

In order for this commission to be taken seriously by the American people,Jamie Gorelick must be removed from the 9-11 Commission and asked to testify under oath.Jamie Gorelick has too much involvement in the activities the commission is now investigating.You sir,Thomas Kean stated that what the commission did involving Jamie Gorelick was none of our business.You are terribly wrong.Read the words of Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and understand their meaning.
The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us -- that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion -- that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.
I am one of those people sir and it is my business what this commission does.Jamie Gorelick was involved in President Clinton's administration and created the wall of separation that is now shown to be one of the biggest problems you are investigating. She also is a litigation partner of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering which represents Prince Mohammed al-Faisal al-Saud, the House of Saud, against a lawsuit filed by a coalition of 600 Sept. 11 families.This is a conflict of interest of the worst order.This country's safety outweighs anything else.
