Even though the brave men who fought at the Alamo weren't technically Texans--how wonderful it would be if all Texans today were as brave and freedom loving as these men were.

But the Texans launched a surprise evening attack on Santa Anna's fortified positions. Let's not overstate it. Santa Anna wasn't particularly fortified at San Jacinto having abandoned much of his artillery on the trip east from the Alamo. He had divided his army in an effort to fan out and catch Sam Houston.
And he was busy entertaining the Yellow Rose of Texas in a tent while his army was taking something akin to a siesta. It only took 18 minutes for the Texans to completely route a completely surprised and practically defenseless army. The Mexicans were dead before they knew what hit them.
I doubt there has ever been another such a short but incredibly decisive battle in world history.

Let the H.A.T. Chapter of Free Republic know if you are going to be near Houston and we can have a "meet & greet".

As a daughter of the Republic of Texas I thank you for the article. It burns me up that little or no mention is made of Texas Independence Day either in our schools or in public but every year they celebrate Fiesta Patrias and Cinco de Mayo like it's going out of style.
Since when did it become a sin to be proud to be a Texan and proud of our heritage?

Even though the brave men who fought at the Alamo weren't technically Texans-- Actually they were, or most of them anyway. Texas Independence was declared March 2, 1836, four days before the fall of the Alamo. Even before the declaration, they were citizens of the Mexican province of Tejas. I think the Anglos among them (the majority) preferred "Texican" to "Texan" anyway. The others were known as Tejanos, and still are today as a matter of fact.

Since when did it become a sin to be proud to be a Texan and proud of our heritage? Well certainly not in San Antonio. We have a ten day (or so) celebration every year to mark the victory of Houston over Santa Ana. It's called simply Fiesta, and IIRC, it starts this Friday, the 16 of April. It's a real multicultural event. Everything from a place Hermann's Happiness (sponsored by the Son's of Hermann, a German-Texan fraternal organization) to the St. Mary's Oyster bake, which features music from modern rock (or whatever) to oldies rock and roll to country to Tejano and some cross pollinated stuff.

Thus, it is especially fitting that The Alamo is opening during Passover week. The reason Jews celebrate the Passover is the same reason that all Americans should remember the Alamo... THIS is the way to maintain one's unique culture in America. It's unfortunate that other cultures hosted by Americans are not quite so supportive.
REMEMBER THE ALAMO.

Since when did it become a sin to be proud to be a Texan and proud of our heritage? Since they tried to get Texans to forget their REAL original Lone Star flag.
