Barbara (L) and Jenna Bush, the daughters of U.S. President George W Bush, walk together from the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, April 11, 2004 after President Bush (news - web sites) and members of his family visited with soldiers wounded in Iraq (news - web sites). Bush awarded 10 purple hearts to troops recovering in the hospital, after attending an Easter Sunday Church service at a chapel within the army base in central Texas.

they are called Eliza B's. She spotted them on someone the minute she got there and had to find out what they were and where you get them. They are often sold in Lilly pulitzer stores, but i found that website and emailed it to her. that's the best selection i have ever seen.

My antagonism toward you has nothing to do with your opinion of the twins. It is because of your attitude toward your pastor and the men in your church complaining of the women distracting them. and your slavish submission to that hypocricy. It seems to me that they ought to be the ones in charge of their thoughts and distractions and to ask that women cover their backs or arms or legs to keep them pure and able to worship is one step away from putting women behind walls, in burkas. That is my antagonism. It takes women to allow that to happen.

The wind was blowing very hard and the camera was looking for a bad pic. It was the press you know, just looking for a way to make them look bad.

"I think if I'd read your posts without looking at the photographs, I would assume the Bush girls went to visit the wounded flashing tattoos, thongs, low rise mini-skirts and macrame halter tops!"
Wow, you do have an overactive imagination, particularly since I specifically mentioned that it was the jean jacket and spaghetti strapped dress that I considered inappropriate for Easter Services.

(Robt ponders the image of Howlin checkin' Xena wearin' garters and buckles under her belt....)
Decides he must look into the problem further....., then immediately ducks as two swords flash overhead prior to belting him.)

About $20...NOT $72!
I'll NEVER forget the granny, lace-up shoes one of my daughters bought and wore (w/sheer blouse and mini-skirt). Ugliest I'd ever seen. Even she laughs about them now.

Oh hon, it was inevitable. When women start talking about panty hose and slips, well there is gonna be trouble. Especially with the regional differences here. At least we all agree on underpants however.

Much of Talbot's spring catalogue remins me of the clothing worn in the early (pre-hippy) 60's. Lots of lime green, hot pink, and orange. And the straw bags that were similar to those Bermuda bags!
Loved the #301 comment, by the way. HA!

"daughter wore a "sheath" to church (if I remember correctly).... you know, in some churches, sleeveless dress would be considered quite immodest."
Perhaps I used the wrong word. Her dress had sleeves. She did not wear a ragged old jean jacket over her dress and she did wear a slinky loud green dress with spaghetti straps.
I hope this helps.

What I said was:
If the skirt is unlined, a slip goes under it.

Oh, good grief. Jenna and Barbara are beautiful, high spirited young women who are rarely seen in public and after reading some of the comments here I'm not in the least surprised. Seldom have I seen so much santimonious puffery or as many assinine assumptions about anyone as had been made about the twins' appearance yesterday. Frankly, the specualation as to how what appears to be an injury to Jenna's knee occured is offensive and way out of line.
They weren't posing for official Easter Sunday portraits they were caught by photographers dashing to the car on a drizzly, windy day that had suddenly turned quite chilly. Few people look their best under those circumstances.
While their choice of clothes may not be what most adults would have selected the twins' choices were in keeping with popular fashion for young coeds in their social circles. Mixing denim with softer fabrics and feminine dresses is very trendy as are high, backless shoes. It seems clear to anyone with an ounce of common sense that Jenna had, in fact, "demurely" covered her shoulders with a wrap of some sort. However, a gust of wind "accidentially" and "inappropriately" reveled the flash of skin that has so unhinged a few folks.
Lastly, I'm sure that President and Mrs Bush were filled with joy at the sight of their lovely young daughters visiting with the wounded at Ft Hood. Moreover, I'd be willing to bet that none of the young soldiers they spoke with spent one minute critiquing their wardrobe. What really matters is what they did, not what they wore.

I can't believe how this thread has devolved. The title is about the girls visiting wounded soldiers............who gives a horse's patoot if they wore burlap sacks..........

You're certainly entitled to your opinion. I have never worn spaghetti straps or denim to church. Not even when I was 21.

That ragged ole jeans jacket probably cost more than your paycheck. And those spaghetti straps were covered by a wrap in case you didn't notice. Next you will be complaining she had a thong on under her dress and a strapless bra thus showing some slutty side. You are way in the minority here with your comments as you continue to try to disavow them. Has it occurred to you that many people are trying to say the same thing to you? You just can't seem to grasp it. You are a fuddy duddy, reactionary, judgemental old coot on the wrong side of fashion and in naive denial about your very own little hottie daughter who is probably having a blast with the other engineering students down at Rice when you are not looking. I will be she has spaghetti straps on, a midrift, low rise pants and a tatoo and you just don't know it.

Sorry, but Xena's Mom and the etiquette books do not recognize the existence of "sandalfoot" hose. If you are wearing cloth on your toes, you should cover the cloth with shoe. That's the rule.

Have you ever counseled men whose lives are devastated, even destroyed, because of addiction to pornography, sex, or their involvement in immorality, and abortion? I have. It's heartbreaking to say the least, and it takes an enormous amount of work to overcome the effects. It is a horror to me that the church would not stand up to stem the tide when it's in her power. I am not saying that women who expose a lot of skin in church are the cause of all those problems, but they inflame the situation.
The churchgoing men to whom I refer are not oversexed. They are just garden variety men with normal male reactions. Perhaps if you lived with a man's reactions for a week, or counseled some of them, you'd get a better idea of why these guys have asked the pastor to speak up.
Why should it be thought so unusual that the church would seek to help men and women keep from sinning and stumbling one another? Jesus came to make it possible, at last, for people to overcome sin. I don't understand why this is thought to be a bad thing.
