Barbara (L) and Jenna Bush, the daughters of U.S. President George W Bush, walk together from the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, April 11, 2004 after President Bush (news - web sites) and members of his family visited with soldiers wounded in Iraq (news - web sites). Bush awarded 10 purple hearts to troops recovering in the hospital, after attending an Easter Sunday Church service at a chapel within the army base in central Texas.

The weather suddenly turned very very bad in that part of Texas on Easter. The jean jacket probably wasn't planned.
Probably true as it was nasty, windy and raining.....

"These girls whose parents were so strict on them while they were teenagers that when they got any freedom whatsoever they went completely wild and did stuff that you could only imagine."
Could happen. I know that it does happens some times. I am not really worried, however, because my daughter is not good because she is under my or my wife's thumb, she is good because she was brought up in a loving and religious home and she wants to be good.
She down at Rice now, where there are lots of wild parties with plenty of drinking going on, but she does not attend those parties, not because we forbid her from attending them, but because that sort of thing does not appeal to her.
Myself, I was as wild as anyone back in the late 60's and 70's, so I have no problem imagining what wild behavior is, since I did it all and I was raised pretty strictly and I was under control until I went off to college in 1968 and went wild with my newfound freedom.
When I got into my thirties, however, I came back to my roots and returned to the church and to a productive and conservative lifestyle.
If my daughter decides she wants to live a wild lifestyle, I will still love her and I will pray that she will get it out of her system and that she will be able to live through it without being hurt too badly and return to the fold.
I think one is more likely to raise well behaved and productive children by giving them a loving, supportive, but structured upbringing with rules than if one just lets one's kids run wild and partake in all the latest fashions.
I do, however, understand that raising kids is a bit of crapshoot and that there is no one best way to raise one's children.
At this point, I am very happy at the way my daughter has turned out and I could not wish for any improvement in any way. She is beautiful, sweet, agreeable, and smart as a whip.

My stepdaughters, who are in their late 20s and are now married, don't dress like that -- nor did they when they were young, because it wasn't the fashion. They STILL show more skin than we did at that age, especially in bathing suits.
My niece and her friends are quite another story. I've actually said to them before, "You better get out of here before your grandmother sees you. And take a jacket."

her other job seems to be to carry the bible in gratuitous media photo ops. Maybe it's just the area I live in .. but catholics don't carry bibles to church

and what I'm saying is they were dressed conservatively and "in" fashion... unless you came here from a Pakistan madras.
In all your posts you have shown little fashion sense and I detect a subtle bushbash attitude. go back to DU, TROLL!

and I detect a subtle bushbash attitudeWell, he's already said Bush isn't conservative enough for him! He's one of the "I'll hold my nose and vote for him -- maybe" voters.
One can only imagine what he would have thought of Jesus, wearing robes and hanging out with all those men, you know?

I am glad they went to church and that they visited the troops. I think they should have worn more appropriate clothing when doing so. It is not the end of the world, but it could have been better without much effort. While the girls may just be ninnies, their mother should have stepped in and given a word to the wise.

I am with you. They went to Church. Jenna had on a wrap. To call them sluts or whores is so awful that it reveals the caller to be some kind of weirdo if you ask me. I think God was pleased and didn't particularly care about the fashion statement preferring to note what was in their heart not on their body.

i meant i would wear mine shorter than theirs! xsteen wouldn't be caught dead in a dress that long, and she dresses very conservatively. i mean Good Lord they could have had something short, tight, or midriff bearing, if they wanted to be INDECENT! i just don't care for the colors or styles of their dresses, but they are perfectly decent and appropriate.

"Number One here, these "girls" are 22 years old, no longer teenagers."
Who is paying for their colleg tuition?
Who is paying for their room and board?
Who is paying for their clothing?
I don't care if they are 25 years old, if I am paying the bill, I have a say in how my money is being spent.
If the girls want to go out on their own and get a job and pay for all their own expenses, then of course they can cal their own shots and dress as poorly as they like.
To: Demetrius Slaughter
more appropriate clothing more appropriate as defined by you, you mean. because we have a majority of freepers, who are some pretty conservative folks, finding their attire perfectly appropriate. and quit digging on Laura Bush for not forcing them to dress as she does. that is just ridiculous.

So, who appointed you the fashion critic for Church on Easter Sunday? Seems to me the only critic worth pleasing at Easter services is God and you and your language and your incredible arrogance might not please him. Pretty girls in pretty shoes going to Church and visiting soldiers afterwards in the company of their parents and grandparents are pretty pleasing if you ask me. Some old man muttering about whores and sluts, well, you get my drift, don't you?

I think you are probably right about why the pictures show them wearing inappropriate clothing, but the bottom line is that they are wearing inappropriate clothing.
No bid deal. They do look cute. At least they are going to church and visiting the troops and that is what is really important. I will not be losing any sleep over how they are dressed, but I think they could have been dressed better, since it was likely that their pictures would be going out over the wire to the entire country.
To: Demetrius Slaughter
I think if I'd read your posts without looking at the photographs, I would assume the Bush girls went to visit the wounded flashing tattoos, thongs, low rise mini-skirts and macrame halter tops! Incidentally, I noted in one of your earlier posts that your daughter wore a "sheath" to church (if I remember correctly).... you know, in some churches, sleeveless dress would be considered quite immodest. I think one has to allow for some differing perspectives here and the difference between taste and propriety. Some of us would like these dresses, some not, but I don't think they can really be criticized as harshly as I've seen on this thread.
