Barbara (L) and Jenna Bush, the daughters of U.S. President George W Bush, walk together from the Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas, April 11, 2004 after President Bush (news - web sites) and members of his family visited with soldiers wounded in Iraq (news - web sites). Bush awarded 10 purple hearts to troops recovering in the hospital, after attending an Easter Sunday Church service at a chapel within the army base in central Texas.

We should be quicker to recognize him next time by his language patterns.

"They just seem unappreciative of the position they hold."

You know, Hildy, I've watched your comments for a long time, but that one is just disappointing. What 'position' is it that you think that the Bush twins "hold".....LOL!

But I'm glad, really. He was getting a bit repetitive.

That has got to be the understatement of this thread!!!!

In fairness, I don't think it's out of line to imagine that if my daddy was the strongest, most powerful man in the world, that I might dress more like a princess, and less like an ordinary girl.

It seems pretty clear that the Bush girls would rather be ordinary girls, and blend in more with their compadres. I think dressing for the role went out of style with the Nixon girls and the Johnson girls. Everybody picked on them for being "Stepford daughters", is my recollection.

Still, I wouldn't mind if the Bush girls dressed more like their mama, who is always a perfect lady.

cajungirl, your post at 923 is very kind, gracious, and most welcome. I thank you sincerely for it.

I for one would be incensed by a minister who made the announcements you describe.

Please keep in mind that it was numerous men in the congregation who asked the pastor to make the request of the ladies; this was not the rule of a heavy-handed pastor. As a woman, I felt no offense to the request and indeed, felt badly for the guys who were driven on the expedient of needing to ask. I imagine they felt a lot of relief just hearing his request and that it validated their need to be as free of distraction in the house of the Lord as possible (there are few places where that freedom can be found these days). I never heard any women complain about it, but I can see how someone who came in new to the church might wonder, especially those whose manner of dressing had prompted the request.

If I have a nice car and a neighbor lusts after it, am I going to sell the car? No. But this area of how we present our own selves has a difference to it. We can't hardly throw away our bodies if someone finds them attractive. ;-) The fine line is discerned in having a clear conscience that is governed by His Word and His Spirit that we are doing what we can to please Him and treat our "brothers" with honor. That includes, as in the case of my church, the congregation being responsive to instruction or correction when it is needing to be given.

Reading this thread has been a real eye-opener for me, as I thought many more women were aware of the effects of the female body on a man when he sees it revealed. I know as a young woman, before I got married, I did not realize the extent of how visually, immediately ignited men are by sight. But God made them that way because His heart is in perpetuating the race and He designed the two sexes to find fulfillment in each other; if women weren't fantastically, irresistibly attractive to men, the men would be out working and skiing, anything but settling down.

I found it interesting that none of the guys on this thread have objected to what I've been writing as untrue, and some have agreed with me in specifics. This whole issue has been swept under the carpet for so long that our society groans when the issue is examined. A lack of appropriate, profound sexual and emotional intimacy in marriages, an inability to relate to each other in meaningful ways, etc., ad nauseum, feeds and perpetuates the cycles, the divorces, the men (including husbands) who are addicted to porn, etc. God's heart is to turn the tide.

Bless you.

I should clarify that I don't have daughters, only sons, and the Bush girls dress a lot like my nieces, who are lovely girls, and (obviously) from a wonderful family.

When it comes to dressing young girls, I am clueless.

But did you have to wear those darned BEANIES to church like we did? We wore navy jumpers with white blouses until 5th grade and then we got to wear pleated skirts, white blouses and sweaters of ANY color! After so many years of navy blue sweaters....ahhhh. One of my sisters was kind enough to knit me a light blue mohair one. By the 8th grade we were rolling up our skirts at the waist so they'd hit above the knees. ;o)

Hildy's remark was that the Bush twin's strike her as "snootie". It wasn't about the appropriateness of the dress, it was "snootie". I'd be VERY interested in what brought her to that characterization.

Lord have mercy, beanies. I have wavy hair, and was very active, and beanies never settled down on my head, they sort of hung at a dangerous angle at all times.

But you remind me of one of my favorite stories. A friend's mother needed to go into the church to retrieve something he'd left, but before she did, he grabbed her, horrified, because she did not have a covering on her head. She'd been cleaning, so she shook off the dust cloth, and plopped that on her head.

He always thought that was so cool . . . .

I'd bet you anything he never told her.

You're right about the "snooty" part.

If they dressed in designer clothes or like rich girls, then snooty might be called for. But they dress so ordinary, like the girl next door, that "snooty" is puzzling.

It doesn't lay out any hem lengths, draw patterns for style, etc., but the tenor of Scripture calls us to keep from causing another person to sin, in any category, so far as we are able.

A man who has a passing sexual thought when he sees an attractive woman, no matter how she is dressed, is not sinning. He is just being a normal well-adjusted man. If he dwells on it or imagines how he can actually have sex with the woman, that is a different matter.

God created women in such a way as to attract the attention of men. If you do not think that is the case, you need to read Song of Solomon; and don't even try to tell me it is only an allegory about God's relationship with man. If you do, I will point to some very specific verses.
