[history]
Amid sloping hills dotted with grazing Black Angus cattle in Pickett and Fentress counties, the most valuable money-making venture may be underground.
Last month, a Kentucky company hit oil on a farm in Pickett County. The pressure of oil naturally bubbling to the surface has been so great that the producers have been unable to remove the drill for the past 25 days.

Pickett County, TN is right on the Kentucky border, about 100 miles or so east of Nashville.

They have been striking oil in the general area of the Big South Fork of Cumberland River ever since the early 1800's. The oil, at first, was the result of accicidents, as people were actually boring for salt water, and struck "Devil's Tar" instead.

Does this mean that we can go ahead and put Tennessee in the Republican column for November?

Pickett County went for Bush in 2000. It usually votes Republican (although Clinton narrowly outpolled Dole because of Perot). It's the smallest county in population, but there are 3 other Tennessee counties which are smaller geographically.

Maybe the Oilers should have kept their name sake.
To: GailA
With prices climbing to a range of $35 to $38 a barrel, there is more incentive for investors to plunk down the risk money to explore and drill new wells. The Chicken Littles who run around screaming "we're running out of oil" have never understood this concept. There's of plenty of oil that's not economical to recover now but will be when prices go up.

This is really cool news. The only thing that pisses me off is that it will be OK to drill there but not in Alaska. Too much public owned land up here, and too many lefty Congressmen and women meddling in our affairs.

Best dart his ass on away from there.
To: vpintheak
There doesn't appear to be much public owned land in Alaska in comparison to most states.

Twenty-something years ago, when I was in Kent, Michigan (on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan), I noticed that the shoreline was full of what looked like black powder. I asked my host what it was, and he said that it was from oil deposits in wells below Lake Michigan (that had not been drilled for fear of spilling oil into the lake).
Anybody know of oil deposits in Michigan?
