"We want to warn Antwerp's Jewish community in its entirety to be on its guard. The community's support for Israel is no secret," Ahmed Azzuz, head of the AEL in Belgium told the Belgian newspaper La Libre Belgique.

"The AEL calls on the Jewish community in Antwerp to cease its support of, and distance itself from, the state of Israel. If not, attacks in Antwerp are almost unpreventable," Azzuz had earlier told the Belgian Flemish magazine Knack, adding, "Every year, 200 Belgian-Israeli reservists leave for Israel to kill innocent civilians."

According to an Israel Channel 1 television report, the Jewish community is taking the threats seriously, and has already contacted elected Jewish officials, the local police and the nation's justice minister. A member of the Belgian diamond merchant's community interviewed on the program confirmed reports that members of the Jewish community are afraid and at present, refrain from being outdoors during the nighttime hours.

Peter Meeus reminded La Libre Belgique, "The quarter was already targeted in 1981, when terrorists attacked a Portuguese synagogue."

The AEL's Azzuz insisted in the media that his statements were not threats.

A spokeswoman for Antwerp police said rigorous security measures had already been introduced.

"Grown massively"? According to DW out of a total population of @ 83,000,000 there will be @ 130,000 Jews in Germany by eoy 2005 (.0015%). The growth that there has been is primarily Jewish immigrants fleeing anti-semitism in former Soviet Republics, not from increased birth rates in European Jews.

There are already 3,400,000 muslims living there legally, who knows how many more illegally.

Not exactly a rosy picture if you happen to be Jewish.

To answer this directly, the growth in European Jewery, at least in Germany, has been through non-traditionally-European Jews who have fled anti-semitism in former USSR states like Uzbekistan.

Although they are likely better off where they are today than where they came from I would suggest that they just jumped out of a hot frying pan into a smoldering fire.

Europe is not much less anti-semitic than it ever was, grafitti seen while on a recent visit to Berlin bears this out. The new Europe, not in the Rumsfeld sense but in the EURABIA-muslim sense, will become an even less friendly place.

Your assertion that the new Jewish growth in Germany is not there to escape anti-semitism in the former USSR states (from which they could not leave for decades) contradicts what I've read and seen. There is no place outside of Israel that is more welcoming to Jewish immigration than the NY area. Those I know who fall into that category, not a lot but enough to form an impression, are vocally cognizant of increasing anti-semitism in Western Europe and Canada with its growing muslim influence.

Their assertion is that it is not a place to put down roots if you can make it over here. The historic/current European bias combined with a muslim population boom that can truly be called massive give them concern.

To be fair, they also speak, and I see it here in town which is heavily Jewish, of an inter-community bias against those Jews from the Eastern Bloc. The American/European Jew has long maintained a sense of societal superiority to the unwashed Eastern Jew. This elitist sentiment does not prevent the extension of a helping hand, it just seeks to keep the recipient at arm's length.
