Children reared by the state
Scottsdale Republic Opinions Column ^ | Craig J. Cantoni

An early draft of the Communist Manifesto had a plank calling for the state to raise children, but it was removed from the final version for being too controversial. It has resurfaced in Arizona 156 years later.

The state has done such a superb job in educating kiddies that it now wants to expand socialized education to all-day kindergarten. Proponents claim that early childhood indoctrination, er, development is necessary to lower the dropout rate and improve academic performance. In addition to all-day kindergarten, they also want the state to provide free pre-kindergarten. Free diapers and strained carrots will be next.

>>A family of four kids currently receives a whopping $336,000 in education welfare for 12 years of public
school.<<

Whoa! I will send them my address. They can refund my money, seeing that I now homeschool. I will pay off my house and get a new van!

When Klintoon first got elected, his education dept. guy wrote an editorial (I think I read it in the Sacramento Bee) outlining his plan for 12 hour a day mandatory public school from age (get this!) 6 MONTHS to 18 years old! I couldn't believe my eyes.

Freaking Brave New World.

These people are truly evil, and they want nothing but domination.

Congrats to you for homeschooling, it really is the only answer. Even many private, religious schools are deeply infected. A homeschooling mother I know vets all the books carefully and many of them are unbelievably sick propaganda for leftist causes, especially feminism and the destruction of the natural family. School books and storybooks written before say 1965 are best.

Science and stuff that is more recent can always be added on.

There was a city council member in Washington, DC, who wanted mandatory preschool for children as young as 2 1/2. It was defeated after a lot of negative publicity.

Remember Hillary Clinton's School-to-Work plan where students would be required to participate in job training programs that would meet the needs of the workforce, not their own wishes? We don't hear much about it today. Parents and students didn't want that either.

Hillary was the one who was also big on uniforms in public schools, as well as "community service" requirements, and daytime curfews. Bill wanted the schools to turn into social service centers where the life of the community centered around the "school," 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

That's where those ideas came from.

God forbid that either of them gets further than they already have.

Right, I remember the whole Klintoon thing about the workforce "needs" controlling what kids are taught, so they can be funneled into the proper slots.

Stuff like that makes me want to be an anarchist. But that quickly turns into totalitarianism, after some chaos and barbarism.

What's needed is more and more right minded conservatives running for office, getting elected, and not getting turned to the dark side.

I recently read an article about a school district that is implementing full day 4 yo kindergarten and eliminating naptimes! The superintendent said naptimes were wasteful and kids needed all-day academics at age 4 to prepare for the new rigors of kindergarten. I am so glad I homeschool.

We've had all day kindergarten in my county in Virginia for more years than I can count. Both my daughters attend public schools and by all accounts they seem to be just fine.

The school has them for 7 hours a day; I have them for considerably more. Both epitomize good Christian young ladies who stand up for their beliefs and refuse to be brainwashed.

The home is more important than the school, especially if the parents practice Monday through Saturday what the family hears on Sunday.

Have you ever compared the price of a private school to what is paid per child in a public school? Makes me wonder what they need the extra money in public schools for. I want to see what that money is being used for now before having more money sent in.

Not a fair comparison to compare public to private. Private schools get to pick and choose who they take; public has to take everyone that walks in the front door. Per student $$ include the special needs children--mentally retarded, severe and profound, autistic, hearing or vision impaired. The costs for some of these groups will take your breath away. Our county has 4 children in a hospital setting and the cost is about $750,000 a year (over $175K each annually) and the county will bear this cost until the end of the school year after their 21st birthday. And those are the residential kids--the day placements are much cheaper--around $75k each, but our county has quite a few of those.

Sometime when you think about it, ask your school board for a breakdown of expenditures for students with ALL special education costs taken out. That is a more realistic figure.

Oh and FYI the top notch private schools in our area (a rural VA county) charge about 8-10K a year. Your experience may vary.

I believe that's in Ann Arundel County, MD. Do you know that children between the ages as young as 5 years are now being given antidepressants?

Story on antidepressant use in preschoolers. Can it be that children become depressed at 3 when they are rushed in the morning to go to a preschool where they have to compete with who knows how many other children for a little attention?

I would hate being a kid today. It's not healthy out there.
