Breakthrough in Cancer ResearchApril 6, 2004
MND NEWSWIRE
Swedish researchers at the Department of Clinical Genetics at the University Hospital in Lund have reported an important discovery on the relationship between genetics and cancer. The old division between blood cancer (leukemia) and solid tumors is not correct.
Data on genetic material related to thousands of cancer variations shows that the same mechanism seems to be behind all forms of cancer.
If the result is correct, medicine can be developed that is directed against every type of tumor. The study is published in the journal Nature Genetics.
Report filed by Roger F. Gay.

Wow, this is breaking news! Let's hope this information can be translated into practical application to help people prevent the dynamics that cause cancer. In the meantime, I'm taking one ibuprofen a day, which is believed to prevent breast cancer.
Thanks for posting this.

This is good news, because the one form of leukemia which is clearly related to cell break points is chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), where the disease is related to a swap of pieces between two chromosones. CML is now being effectively treated with a drug that interferes with the signal telling the cell to swap the pieces.
My mother's had CML for six years and went on that drug three years ago and she's been in complete remission (well under 1% diseased cells) ever since. The same is true for at least half of those being treated with this drug (and the earlier the disease is found the more likely it is the drug can knock out the disease).
There's an excellent chance that if other cancers are similar in nature that similar drugs can be developed to prevent the genetic damage. The one difficulty with other cancers is metastasis. Leukemia is unique because it does not spread to other organs, so if the disease is stopped you don't have to worry about it popping up somewhere other than the bone marrow.
