BARCELONA today became the first city in Spain to ban bullfighting after a massive campaign by human rights activists against the "cruel practice".
Protests were held in the Catalan capital as councillors took the vote at city hall, with demonstrators waving placards declaring "Barcelona against bullfighting".
Animal rights groups had collected 250,000 signatures from around Europe which they handed in to Barcelona's city hall last month.
The petition was an initiative by the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and Spanish animal rights groups, appalled at the killing of dozens of bulls each year at Barcelona's La Monumental bullring.
While bullfighting remains popular in major Spanish cities, including the capital Madrid, it raises relatively scant interest in Catalonia, the region covering north-east Spain.

"human rights activists"? -- Last time I checked, bulls were not human.

A bunch of mariposas. Bullfighting is the last manly sport still legal in much of the world. At least Louisiana hasn't banned Cockfighting.

What are they going to do with the Plaza de Toros Monumental -- make it a baseball stadium? I had my one and only view of bullfighting there in Sol y Sombra on a Thursday many years ago.

Well, instead of killing these animals in at what is seen as, at least a challenge to the animal; they will be herded to the slaughter house.
Besides; don't some countries promote bullfights without the final murderous act?

Like the Limeys aversion to fox hunting...just don't understand how an entire country suddenly becomes a bunch of poofters.

I agree with you about dogfights and cockfights.
Bull fighting, man against beast, dates back at least to ancient Crete and ancient Thera. It evokes a time when men were men and bulls were wild creatures, symbols of strength and virility, more than just a lot of porterhouse waiting to get zapped in a slaughter house.

Gee! Maybe I can be a real man! I will put on my wife's sequined robes, head out into my back pasture and stick a knife in the neck of one of my bulls!
Please clap for me!
