An "American" mom first? Surely you jest. You sound like Judas arguing that, afterall, he was a disciple in good standing.

People have to understand one thing that Machiavelli made clear: it is better to be feared than loved.

The initial report-Drudge citing a 'Pentagon Spokesman-stated 134 or so Americans killed. Later Drudge backed off.

Mo, I just heard about an hour ago that my nephew who is a Marine is in Fallujah. He was in Iraq at the beginning of the war last year, then he came home to a new son. Now he is again in harm's way.

Here's a photo of him in Iraq, courtesy of the Orange County, CA, Register.

Prayers are welcomed.

I hate to second guess a commander in the field, but I have to ask why these Marines were apparently taken by surprise. That should not happen.

Slip, your nephew has my prayers. Thank you for asking for them.

If you'd like, he can be added to the prayer list of military personnel on the Dose. Just say the word, and he'll be prayed for, round the clock.

Gramma, I think he's already on your list. I thought he was home. I just found out today that he is in Fallujah. Thanks for the prayers. I had two nephews going to Iraq at one time. One is now home for good after five years.

Again, thank you. He is a really fine boy/man. Sheesh, I was there when he was born.

You need to read up on the Spanish-American war. After we won the war the Moros in the former Spanish Phillipines declared war on US soldiers and we fought an unknown war there for several years.

Your "vendor" statement proves nothing. We had vendors for about everything.

A lot of this is choice of words. "Pitched battle". "Intense fighting not before seen." Casualty count? A handful. Think about this. Think of it from WW II perspectives. These would have been called minor skirmishes and the casualties called mercifully low. Words don't change numbers. These casualty counts are not high. This victory is not being achieved at a "huge" cost.

On July 1, 1916, on the first day of the Battle of Somme, British casualties totalled 57,470, of which 19,240 were fatal.

That was 19,240 dead in one day.

America may have the mightest war machine ever created on Earth but the resolve of the American Home Front in the 21st Century is pathetic with the American liberal media and Democrat politicians actively undermining public morale for their own political benefit and to the benefit of our enemy and with close to 50% of the American civilian population ready to panic over casualties that that would have been the average of two minutes of the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

God Bless these brave and honorable soldiers, their familes, and all soldiers of the coalition.

Nearly 3000 American citizens were murdered in one morning on Sept 11th.

I expect his [approval] numbers to rise -- rally 'round the flag and all that.

Only if we stop "trying to win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people" and start kicking serious Islamist ass. ......immediately.
