For those a little rusty in history, Magineault was the "brilliant" leader who, to prevent invasion of France by Germany, fortified an "impenetrable" static defense line along the French-German border. The Germans simply went around it, invading via Belgium, and destroyed the French in no time at all.

I remember seeing some of the bunkers in the woods as a 15 year old on a bike tour of France. We'd pull over for a rest when we saw one, walk about 15 yards into the woods and observe from a distance. The bunkers allegedly went down many levels, and with the decay of years it was unsafe to go near or in them. Some people said vagrants would live there, but the risk of dropping through a hole some 10 stories deep (who knows?) probably kept most of them out.

It was really pretty cool as a kid to see them, but even at 15 the thought kept going through my mind: "WHAT were they THINKING?!?"

Obviously, they weren't. Perhaps it was more of a public works "pork" project to keep people busy after the war.

What an ultimate waste, unless you consider a moment's amusement for a 15 year old...
