BRIDGEPORT (AP) -- A Bridgeport fire inspector says sparks from metal scraping against Jersey barriers is what caused the fire in last week's tanker truck crash on Interstate 95 in Bridgeport.
The fiery crash destroyed the southbound sections of the highway, shutting down the highway for days in both directions.
The inspector says friction of metal scraping against about 500 feet of Jersey barrier ruptured two of three tanker-trailer compartments and threw off sparks that ignited fuel spilling on the highway.
The March 25 accident caused no serious injuries, but created a major traffic nightmare.
The southbound section of the highway as reopened Wednesday after a temporary bridge was installed. The northbound section was reopened on Sunday night.
State police investigators have not finished their probe into what actually caused the crash.
Worked for TWA-800.
