What a great article! Thanks for posting. I really love Jan & Dean.
there was no way we were going to compete with "God Only Knows."
LOL! Ain't it the truth - what a magnificent song and production. God bless Brian Wilson.

One time, we ran into Bobby[Rydell] at some Dick Clark thing, and he said he was recording that night. We said, "Oh, man, we'll come on by and hang out." He looked at us and said, "Oh, no, the session is closed." [Laughs] We looked at each other, like, "Closed? What are we going to steal from him? 'Volare?' Why would it be closed? We just wanted to say hi." That was not the mentality we were used to.
LOL! An amusing story that illustrates the contrast in East Coast and West Coast attitudes (at least at that time).

Pet Sounds is one of the most important and underrated albums in rock history. The Beatles recognized it's brilliance, too bad so many of their fans didn't.
"Without Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper wouldn't have happened... Pepper was an attempt to equal Pet Sounds." Sir George Martin, Producer, The Beatles
"No one is educated musically until they've heard Pet Sounds... It is a total classic record that is unbeatable in many ways." Sir Paul McCartney

Thank you for the ping.
I really enjoyed the interview with Dean.
It reminded me of their great music. What a talent was taken when Jan had his accident. What a great story about his recovery.
Thanks again.

Saw Jan and his band perform around '78 in some local dive in Lubbock, Texas. Their description of him was dead on; he was obviously suffering from brain damage and his band carried the load. Still, he performed bravely.........and seemed a nice enough fella when I chatted briefly with him afterward.

Great article. Thanks for all you've posted on this, archy. It's coming across to me what a good guy Dean is through all of this -- he must get tired of constantly being asked about Jan, almost never about himself. Also good to recognize that J&D celebrated the normal, which is why they hold up so well today and why they still make us feel good.

I was in the Army in 1966 when Pet Sounds came out. Though I'd played in bands on and off for almost a decade before then, I'd firmly resolved to lay off until I was discharged- I just didn't have the time to stay in practice and I wasn't about to give it a halfhearted go.
Then I heard Pet Sounds, and was completely blown away. Within a few months I was back at it again, wound up stationed in Germany near Munich, and was playing with a band made of half US GIs including an occasional Hollies session player and arranger, and half Germans with serious concert/philharmonic music dues paid. Shortly thereafter, Cream's Disraeli Gears album came out, and I figured I'd made the right move. About a third of our sets were surf/summer music, about a third beatles and Brit Invasion tunes, and the rest all sorts, including several Elvis and Del Shannon covers.

They deserve it. Especially when you look at some of the nonentities already there. It would be nice to skateboard over it in their honor. I know they look for volunteers to maintain those. Today Jan and Dean, tomorrow The Rip Chords.

Thanks for the ping - this whole week has brought a lot of memories and brought to mind a lot of other old car race and tragedy tunes like "Hot Rod Lincoln", "Last Kiss", "GTO", "Shut Down", et al. that I haven't thought about for quite some time.
Our oldies station here, WRLL-AM 1690, has been playing a lot of Jan and Dean stuff all week including the older numbers like "Popsicle" and "Heart and Soul."
But my favorite is still "Jennie Lee" by Jan and ARNIE >>>

Oh yeah.
Thanks Meek and arch.
Dean knew him best
and loved him most.
Time to let Jan go.
Good memories,
great music.
He came back from Deadman's Curve.
That's the best part of all.

Pet Sounds was Magical Mystery Tour before the Beatles did it.
It was from a kinder, gentler time.
