What a great article! Thanks for posting. I really love Jan & Dean.
there was no way we were going to compete with "God Only Knows."
LOL! Ain't it the truth - what a magnificent song and production. God bless Brian Wilson.

One time, we ran into Bobby[Rydell] at some Dick Clark thing, and he said he was recording that night. We said, "Oh, man, we'll come on by and hang out." He looked at us and said, "Oh, no, the session is closed." [Laughs] We looked at each other, like, "Closed? What are we going to steal from him? 'Volare?' Why would it be closed? We just wanted to say hi." That was not the mentality we were used to.
LOL! An amusing story that illustrates the contrast in East Coast and West Coast attitudes (at least at that time).

Saw Jan and his band perform around '78 in some local dive in Lubbock, Texas. Their description of him was dead on; he was obviously suffering from brain damage and his band carried the load. Still, he performed bravely.........and seemed a nice enough fella when I chatted briefly with him afterward.

Great article. Thanks for all you've posted on this, archy. It's coming across to me what a good guy Dean is through all of this -- he must get tired of constantly being asked about Jan, almost never about himself. Also good to recognize that J&D celebrated the normal, which is why they hold up so well today and why they still make us feel good.

Thanks, bud.
RIP Jan. After an injury like his, victory is in the small things. Watched a friend of mine going through this (gunshot wound), read a lot about it. Any comeback is a victory...
