Hoisting a rubber imitation of an assault rifle yesterday in the lobby of Police Headquarters, Police Commissioner Sylvester M. Johnson made a point: "There's no reason to have this type of weapon other than to kill a human being."
Johnson joined several state representatives, a half-dozen mothers of murder victims, and others at a news conference calling for the reauthorization of the federal assault-weapons ban set to expire Sept. 13 unless Congress acts to renew it. Should the federal ban "sunset," some state lawmakers hope to pass a bill introduced in Harrisburg last month that would restrict assault weapons.
"I support this legislation 1,000 percent. They're not only shooting citizens. They're shooting police officers. Anything I can do, anything law enforcement can do, we're totally and completely for it," Johnson said.
Rep. T.J. Rooney (D., Northampton), one of those behind the bill introduced March 17, said at the news conference: "The prospect of the federal assault-weapons ban sunsetting is something that I think should concern, and does concern, the vast majority of Pennsylvanians throughout the commonwealth."
Yeah, this is a guy I can take seriously.
Fair enough, but when someone is breaking into my home, or for those times that society and the rule of law break down (such as the Rodney King riots), I want something that is designed to kill.
Yeppers! One of my previous taglines was "John Kerry's votes have killed more people than my guns!" Its a truism for anyone who votes the leftist line...
Here is the critical line. These folks seem to think that goverment employees are not just citizens, but something different; not just regular people, but something special...
By the way, a police office is probably a 100 times more likely to be killed with his own gun than a so called "assualt" weapon.
The majority of real cops who actually go out and do police work instead of sitting in plush offices collecting fat paychecks do support our RKBA. I think the last poll on that subject I saw found that about 85-90% of all cops support 2nd amendment rights.
It's mainly just administrators such as chiefs and police commissioners who have the Nazi-like attitude that "civilians" should not be allowed to own guns. The chiefs and other administrative cops are dependent on the good graces of liberal urban-area politicians to get and keep their jobs, so whatever the official party line is on any issue automatically becomes their position as well.
There are several LEO's in my extended family, and every one of them is a strong and active supporter of 2nd amendment rights. I have occasionally sat in on the off-duty bull sessions held by those guys and some of their friends in LE, The subject of guns and gun rights comes up in almost every session, and I can tell you that there isn't a single one of them who doesn't support your and my right to keep and bear arms. That isn't to say that all street cops believe as they do or that the attitude of some new LE recruits may not be different, but I believe the majority of cops still support the RKBA.
They might in theory support the second amendment, but when the order to confiscate comes along would they fail to obey it? Would they even call in with the "blue flu?" Going by what happened in NYC the police there were only too eager to confiscate the semiautomatic firearms under the regime of Dinkins. I don't remember reading about a single solitary instance of "street cop" refusal to grab the guns.
I guess I'm saying is that they may "talk the talk", but there hasn't been any evidence that any of them "walk the walk."
Many of us are on your your side.
Good!
I agree. When government lobbies government, by definition it departs from "by the people for the people".
ANY time it lobbies for anything, it is pitting its will against that of the people it purports to serve.
Then why do cops all love them so much? Are they just itching to kill human beings?
Even with the flash hider if it's over 10 years old. The DCM only modified their rules to even allow the "neutered" rifles after the AWB was passed. Such rifles are also quite useful in situations such as the one many Korean shop owners found themselves in during the "Rodney King" riots. Of course they application may indeed involve killing people, but then so would throwing Molotov cocktails at the approaching hoards.
