Women More Sensitive to Pain Than Men
But study didn't find any racial differences in pain thresholds
THURSDAY, April 1 (HealthDayNews) -- Blacks and whites have about the same sensitivity to pain, but women appear to be more sensitive to it than men.
That's what Duke University researchers report in the April issue of the Journal of Pain.
"Many pain medications are addictive and have unpleasant side effects, so it's important for physicians to be able to understand exactly how much pain their patients are experiencing," lead researcher and psychologist Dr. Tavis Campbell said in a prepared statement.
He conducted the study while at Duke; he's now at the University of Calgary in Canada.
"This research supports well-established findings of slightly higher sensitivity to pain among women compared to men, but revealed no difference between whites and African-Americans," Campbell said.
Previous research and anecdotal evidence have suggested blacks are more sensitive to pain than whites. Campbell suggested pain assessment procedures may be responsible for such racial differences in pain sensitivity.
His study included 76 men and 59 women aged 25 to 45; 72 were black, the rest white. A blood pressure cuff was inflated on the arm of each study participant and left inflated for several minutes. That created an aching sensation. The participants rated their pain according to standard pain rating scales, which gauge both the intensity and the unpleasantness of the pain.

"This is the most bogus study I have ever read."
Right on the money Miss Marple. My two sons are the biggest wooses when it comes to pain and being sick. I've had dental work done...fillings, teeth drilled down to fit bridges, and I don't take novocaine or any local anesthetic. I can't stand the feeling that novocaine brings. The effects of the novocaine last far longer than any minor discomfort I feel sitting in the dentist's chair. I've sat there and listened to grown men whine and carry on, telling the dentist not to hurt them and they're screaming at the top of their lungs..."ow, Ow, OWWWW!"
I had my youngest son 33 years ago. I had been in the hospital most of the night in labor, and when it came time to deliver, they advised me that the anesthesiologist wasn't on duty yet. So, I ended up having my 10 pound son without the benefit of a local or being knocked out. After that, nothing bothered me.

Yea....I had to keep the bedroom window open in the middle of a cold winter because I was so hot! My hubby had to sleep on the couch cause he couldn't take the cold.

Try child birth sometime, dude. Then, comment. Try a heart attack last saturday night, no insurance, so no hospital. Gutted it out here in the apartment. It has since been confirmed, and I have had two before, know what I am looking at. Off to work the next morning. Ten steps, stop to rest. Ten steps, rest. Hurts like holy hell.
Yeah we're all al bunch of weak-kneed pussies. Right.

Well you are just one example. You do realize that many women, including myself, have used pain medication during delivery right? I found labor cramps unbearable. I just wanted to die, they were the most awful pain ever. I am terrible with achiness and cramping apparently, however, I am able to tolerate soreness and tissue injury wihtout any pain medication like after a surgery. On that note, I think besides differences in men and women, individuals probably have differences based on the type of injury or pain they are enduring. I think this has a lot to do with our individual networks of nerves and pain receptors. Apparently my nerves are either more generous in that area or sensitive then yours that I have a different perception of labor pain then you do.
I totally disagree with you on men being babies. That is not my experience with my husband at least, or my son. I don't suppose my anectdotal evidence is any less compelling than yours.

"Couldn't it just be that the women in the study were more willing to report they were feeling pain than the men, who didn't want to appear "wimpy"? No because men will always create complex situations for themselves. Pain is just another bother that comes along with the consequences. Men are true-to-form unless women allow us to be wimpy.

Still, men have a much higher metabolism... calories don't just disappear into thin air. They're converted to heat... but I will be willing to concede that it's a combination of both factors :o)

Bwahahahahaha!!!!!
You haven't even contradicted me, much less proven me wrong. All you've done is offer a different anecdote than mine.
I got a twofer from you: "Anecdotal evidence" and "Proof by Example". It's my lucky day!
