Man arrested in terrorist affair is reported to be Swedish citizen

The 38 year old man of Moroccan extraction who was arrested in Copenhagen yesterday is reported to be a Swedish citizen and living in Malmö [south Sweden] according to the Danish news agency Ritzau. He is wanted for attempted murder in connection with a terrorist attack in his native country.

Three other Swedish citizens were also taken into custody by Danish police yesterday. A total of seven men were arrested but all except the 38 year old man have been released.

The Swedish Minister of Justice, Thomas Bodström, told TT that he is informed but that he does not want to comment at present. There were no comments from the Swedish security police (SÄPO) either.

The arrested man is, according to Ritzau, living in Malmö, and was sent to Ishöj [suburb of Copenhagen] by a Moroccan businessman to fetch a consignment of carpets.

He was arrested yesterday amid strong secrecy. The court proceedings were kept behind ”double closed doors”, which is a Danish term when not even the indictment is official. The police can therefore not comment whether the man has any connections to terrorist activities.

- I can only say that is a case regarding extradition to a third country, chief inspector Per Larsen told Ritzau.

It was in the Copenhagen suburb Ishøj [very rich in Mid-East immigrants] the Danish anti-terrorist force struck, yesterday. A van, rented in Jakobsberg outside Stockholm, was parked outside the ware-house where some 30 police, dogs, and a helicopter assisted in the arrests. The police surrounded the area and took everyone in the neighbourhood into custody. No information about the reasons for the raid has been given to the media.

SÄPO confirms to the Swedish TV news [Rapport] that there were several Swedes among the people apprehended, and that the Swedes were previously known by the police.

Of the seven persons, three had just arrived in a van rented in Stockholm, where they are living. SÄPO had liaised with its Danish counterparts. According to BT the van was followed by Swedish undercover police on its journey through Sweden. On the other side of the strait the Danish police took over.

According to Margareta Linderoth at SÄPO the operation was in its entirety run by the Danish police.

- I can only state that the persons apprehended in Denmark are known to us, but there are no suspicions that this concerned a terror attack planned against Sweden.

The arrested man is described in a tabloid as overweight, bearded and long haired. He is said to be connected to an islamic movement in Morrocco.

You can always know when reading Swedish newspapers: Either it is stated that the "suspects" are ethnic Swedes, or blond, or non-immigrants,or it is not, in which case you know that they have names like Ali, Muhammad or Omar.

Of course the PC code forbids the papers to actually state that any criminal is of Middle Eastern ethnicity.

hello, sorry to be pretty random but I'm having trouble translating this sentance in Swedish.

The context of the phrase is that it appears on a record for a band I like. One side of the record says "Släpp en hund..." and the other side of the record says "...På cederlund!!"

Now, I know this says something about dropping a dog? and My friend says he thinks Cederlund is a proper name but he has no idea what it means. He lives in Visby.

I'm saddened but not suprised.
I've run into many of the Arabs and other Muslims in Malmo. Many were unpleasent. (We had to start screening taxi services after on Arab driver refused to drop us off at the Jewish cemetary, while another ignored directions and "got lost" on the way to the Synagogue. Perhaps, it was an honest mistake. He was quite involved in shouting at us about Israel.) Having spoken to Swedish-Jewish relatives who live there, our experience was not unique.
Do the local beurs treat ethnic Swedes poorly, or are they simply focused on harassing the Jewish population?
