US Promises to Punish Those Responsible for Gruesome Iraq Attacks

The top U.S. official in Iraq says Wednesday's gruesome attacks on four American civilians whose burned bodies were put on display in the town of Fallujah will not go unpunished.

"It's going to be deliberate, it will be precise and it will be overwhelming," U.S. General Mark Kimmitt said, speaking to reporters in Baghdad. He warned insurgents in the town of Fallujah to be prepared for U.S. forces to strike back following Wednesday's killing of four American contractors by a frenzied mob that dragged their charred bodies through the streets.

Televised footage of the act has provoked outrage from Americans in the United States and led U.S. administrator in Baghdad Paul Bremer to issue a warning.

"Their deaths will not go unpunished," he promised.

The White House blamed the attacks on supporters of Saddam Hussein. The remains of the four were to be turned over to the U.S. military.

A day after the attack, three American soldiers were injured in another attack near Fallujah, this time when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb.

HONG KONG (NNS) -- Sailors from USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) and Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 5 took time out March 8 from their port visit here to give back to the local community by volunteering to help at the Salvation Army.

The carrier, which operates from its forward-deployed location of Yokosuka, Japan, visited the city March 6-10.

WHITE POWDER FOUND

About 70 members of staff are undergoing decontamination treatment after a suspicious chemical was found in their offices.

The white powder was discovered at the BBC-owned Galleon, which handles distribution, subscriptions, customer support, and merchandising sales for a range of magazines including many of the BBC's own publications, Private Eye, and Hello! magazine.

About 70 employees were in the building when the package was opened, and six are believed to have come into direct contact with the white powder, a spokeswoman for Kent Police said.

2 Sailors Evacuated From Kitty Hawk

PERTH, Australia - Two U.S. sailors, one suffering pneumonia and one with a broken arm, were evacuated from their warship stationed off Australia's far northwest coast, officials said Sunday.

The pair were airlifted from the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk near Exmouth, 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) north of the city of Perth on Saturday, a defense department spokesman said on condition of anonymity, the Australian Associated Press reported.

A navy plane flew the sailors to an Australian air base in Perth. They were then taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital, where the man suffering from pneumonia was placed in intensive care.

He was in a serious but stable condition, the hospital said.

"He is improving and the outlook at this time is good," a spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

"However, he could still be in the intensive care unit for the next week or so, but at this time, that is the prognosis."

The other sailor was in an orthopedic ward receiving medical attention for his broken arm, the hospital said. It was not known how long he will remain in hospital.

The hospital spokesman said it was not known when the man contracted pneumonia and how his fellow crew mate broke his arm.

Hey all, I'm just thinking out loud...I have a question for all of you. We have heard of a lot of different events over the past year that could be considered work done by Al Qaeda. But the two attacks, one in NY and one in Madrid took place on days that had some numeric significance. The refinery's fire and others don't seem to be on a significant day numerically and did not occur with multiple detonations. Is if possible that AQ has not attacked anywhere in the homeland since 911, and any attacks that may have occurred were the works of smaller terrorist groups or just accidents that just happen? If this is the case that AQ has not made any additional attack since, then they are 1 for 1 and have a pretty good record of completing missions...this is kind of scary.

Well MamaDearest, you will be happy to know the ARE running ads in the Toledo area, on the radio at least. I barely watch TV, so I can't say on that front.

As a matter of fact, the DHS messages run more often than the political ads. at least once an hour, more frequently during the 3-6pm rush hour.

FBI issues warning to al-Qaeda

BEIJING (AFP) - US Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller Wednesday warned al-Qaeda against unleashing terrorist strikes ahead of US presidential elections while alerting Asia to potential attacks by extremist Islamic groups.
"We want al-Qaeda to know that while the threat level may not go up, the United States will be on high alert," Mueller told journalists in Beijing.

"If you (al-Qaeda) do come to the United States and do believe that you can undertake a terrorist attack, we will be on you, we will be there overseeing you and we will be following you."

Of specific concern would be the national conventions of the Republican and Democratic Parties ahead of the US presidential elections in November, and the Athens Olympic Games, he said.

Mueller's statements came as he ended a three-day visit to Beijing -- the first-ever to China by an FBI director -- aimed at expanding anti-terrorism cooperation with Chinese law enforcement agencies.

"While there have not been any specific threats, dates and time and the like, we cannot discount the threat being made," he said, referring to recent audio tapes attributed to al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants.

He said the US was concerned that al-Qaeda may be emboldened to strike around US elections after bombings in Madrid last month killed some 200 train commuters ahead of Spain going to the polls, an act seen as influencing the election loss of the conservative government.

"The United States must be vigilant to assure that al-Qaeda does not think that it can undertake the same thing to the United States," Mueller said.

"We in the FBI ... are putting together plans to increase the protection and the security of the United States all the way through to the fall."

He further warned Asian countries of a terrorism threat in the region, while alerting Beijing of a threat from Islamic fundamentalism in China.

"Just because you have not seen substantial terrorist attacks in China does not mean there could not be in the future or in other countries in Asia," Mueller said.

Terrorists were "individuals who may subscribe to a greater or lesser degree to extremist Islamic fundamentalism," he said, including al-Qaeda, the group responsible for the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States.

"There are certainly individuals in China who could be described as having that same mindset as well as a desire to utilise terrorist acts to further their agenda whether you call it al-Qaeda or a group loosely affiliated with al-Qaeda," he said.

He refused to comment on whether he specifically discussed with his Chinese counterparts Muslim groups in China's westernmost Xinjiang region, or a recent demand by Beijing for Washington to list several groups linked to a Xinjiang independence movement as international terrorist groups.

"Al-Qaeda, or al-Qaeda-affiliated groups, are spread throughout the world," Mueller said.

"They might not be tightly tied to al-Qaeda, but they may nonetheless share al-Qaeda's world view and the desire to kill Americans, or Chinese, or Australians or others.

"Our view is that there is a threat and continuing threat and we will do all within our power, including with our counterparts overseas, to address and eradicate that threat."

The "native Americans" were anything but paragons of environmental virtue. Many tribes were nomadic. They consumed the resources of a location and moved on. He plays the race card, but fails to acknowledge that it was black tribesmen who sold the slaves to traders in Africa. The individuals were often captive prisoners from skirmishes with nearby rival tribes. He omits that dirty little detail about the number of slave owners who were themselves black. Rivers of blood in the U.S.? Try Rwanda and Burundi. The Hutus and Tootsis hacked away at each other with machetes until over 60,000 were dead. The rivers indeed ran with blood and body parts.

Slavery is gone from American soil, but you can find it alive and well in Africa. The Moslems of Sudan keep the Christians as slaves.

Assailants kill village headman, set 50 fires in Muslim-dominated southern Thailand
BANGKOK (Thailand) April 22 - Assailants fatally shot a village headman and set fire to 50 public buildings in near-simultaneous attacks Thursday in southern Thailand, where more than 70 people have died this year in violence blamed on Islamic separatists, officials said.

The headman was driving a car in Narathiwat province when two gunmen on a motorcycle drove alongside and opened fire, a police official said.

Less than an hour earlier, fires were started at 50 different locations in 11 of Narathiwat province's 13 districts, another official said.

The targets included government offices, living accommodations for railway officials, telephone booths and a highway rest area, said the official, who also spoke on condition of anonymity.

There were no reports of casualties from the arson attacks, which were reminiscent of events on Jan. 4, when assailants set fire to 21 schools in Narathiwat before raiding an army arsenal and stealing hundreds of weapons. Four soldiers were killed in the raid.

The attacks marked the start of an upsurge of violence in Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani provinces, the only Muslim-majority areas in the predominantly Buddhist country.

Muslims in the south have long complained of discrimination by the central government.

No one has claimed responsibility for the violence, which government officials and locals blame on Islamic separatists fighting to create a Muslim homeland in the three provinces bordering Malaysia.
