US Promises to Punish Those Responsible for Gruesome Iraq Attacks
The top U.S. official in Iraq says Wednesday's gruesome attacks on four American civilians whose burned bodies were put on display in the town of Fallujah will not go unpunished.
"It's going to be deliberate, it will be precise and it will be overwhelming," U.S. General Mark Kimmitt said, speaking to reporters in Baghdad. He warned insurgents in the town of Fallujah to be prepared for U.S. forces to strike back following Wednesday's killing of four American contractors by a frenzied mob that dragged their charred bodies through the streets.
Televised footage of the act has provoked outrage from Americans in the United States and led U.S. administrator in Baghdad Paul Bremer to issue a warning.
"Their deaths will not go unpunished," he promised.
The White House blamed the attacks on supporters of Saddam Hussein. The remains of the four were to be turned over to the U.S. military.
A day after the attack, three American soldiers were injured in another attack near Fallujah, this time when their Humvee struck a roadside bomb.

I'm getting the sense that we, here on the Threat Matrix thread, have subtley shifted into Orange Alert mode over these last few days . . . Any guesses on how long before Homeland Security joins us to make it "official"?

Police Seize Kalashnikovs From U.S.-Bound Ship (Headed for New York) AIDAN LEWIS Associated Press Writer The Associated Press Published: Apr 20, 2004
ROME (AP) - Authorities in southern Italy seized about 7,500 Kalashnikov assault rifles and other combat-grade firearms from a ship headed for New York, officials said Tuesday.
The weapons - AK-47s, AKM rifles and machine guns worth more than $6 million - were found mixed in with properly labeled guns in cargo containers on board a Turkish-flagged ship that docked at the port of Gioia Tauro, a police official said.
Documents accompanying the cargo indicated the weapons were destined for a company in Georgia, the official said. During customs controls in Italy, officials found that two of the ship's containers held combat-grade Kalashnikov rifles hidden under conventional firearms that included SKA rifles and Mauser rifles. The rifles were designated combat weapons because they had bayonets affixed and cartridges that held up to 30 rounds, the official said. The official said police suspected the arms were being smuggled, and he declined to give the name of the company in Georgia, citing the need for secrecy during the investigation.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the weapons were discovered 10 days ago, but that police delayed an announcement until they had carried out further checks.
The ship was traveling from the Romanian port of Constanta to New York. The AK-47 rifles had been altered so they couldn't be used for rapid fire, but the alteration could be easily reversed, police said. A 1994 ban prevents the U.S. gun industry from making, importing or selling military style semiautomatic weapons because. But that law expires in September.

Interesting article. So, what's up in Georgia?? If, as it states in the article, that they delayed for 10 days releasing the information, that leads me to believe that whatever company/group/etc. this shipment was headed for has been checked out.
Has anyone in Georgia heard a whisper about any investigations or do we know of any known groups down there??
Seems like I've a US known terrorist cell map somewhere. Might be interesting to see if there's anything down there.

http://www.doglegs.net/cclovett/mapof.htm This is a link to a map of known Islamic groups in the U.S. It's from Feb. 03 I can't seem to find anything newer.
This is a "just in case you missed it back in prior threads" link
To: KylaStarr
I was also thinking about that map when I posted the article.
When looking at the map, it seems that AQ could have migrated north from Florida, and others could have migrated to Georgia from VA, NC and SC. Also might help to know any Muslim "communities" in Georgia, building new mosques or starting sham charities. As always follow the money.
This will probably be the first and last we hear about this illegal arms shipment...it will go the way of other mysterious stories like missing police uniforms, missing tanker trucks, the German military bases that were shut-down because of a mysterious illness, elks and bison dropping dead on the plains etc....

I certainly would be interesting to find out. I know I've seen the terror cell map on FR before but can't remember where. I know Steve Emerson has it in his book. I'm going to out his book tonight.

4thygipper: Thanks for link!
All: I've been lurking on this thread for a while and wanted to add some information to your compilation:
VeriSign Issues Alert on Massive New Worm
"It would appear as if we are bearing witness to a broad-reaching reconnaissance scan to discover open SSL servers, followed by targeted denial-of-service attacks against some of those servers," Charles Kaplan, Information Security Officer for the MSS division at VeriSign, told TechNewsWorld.
An increase in suspicious activity this weekend has Internet security experts bracing for what some analysts warn could be the next big worm attack worldwide. Virus monitors spent the weekend watching an increased level of activity that experts said could be the start of a Blaster-like attack.
SNIP
In what could be a related event, the Internet Storm Center this weekend issued its own alert about a possible worm attack having started against BlackIce firewall devices -- the second such attack on this software in three weeks.
To: freeperfromnj
The news is all very quiet today.
The internet news - Russia shuts down access, new security holes, the article in the above post, a power outage in LA again - rumors of jihadis in Texas and a general worldwide campaign that seems to have been interdicted.
Just too quiet all of a sudden.
To: callisto
Thanks for the post callisto. That info is much appreciated.
Seems to me that unless we can stop the next attack, it'll happen in phases. Phase 1-Take down the internet, Phase 2-snarl traffic to block escape routes, Phase 3-deploy whatever weapons that have been prepositioned.
It's a rather ugly scenario, but one we need to be aware of.
