Indian Americans, who have usually been very visible in Democratic presidential campaigns seem to be keeping a low profile this time round. This obviously has something to do with the presidential candidate Senator John Kerrys criticism of outsourcing jobs to India.
The community has prepared a white paper for presentation to John Kerry at a private meeting today (in San Francisco). Their are many issues that will be covered, and outsourcing is just one of them. So far, the Democratic Party and John Kerry are talking against outsourcing, but we feel that this issue is being debated intensely, with input from our group, and we hope to change the prevailing stand by providing more relevant information.
Most economists, and the business commumity nationwide appears to be more level headed in their thinking, and are presenting their views about outsourcing in a positive manner, says Kishore Kripalani, a long time activist in the Democratic party and CEO of Gaylord Enterprises which runs a chain of Indian restaurants in the West Coast.
Vinod Vin Gupta, founder and CEO of infoUSA, a $300m database company based in Omaha-Nebraska, and a good friend of former US President Bill Clinton, also believes that the Democratic Partys stand on outsourcing is more poll year rhetoric than any serious economic policy statement. We have to compete globally and US has to find the best proiduct and services at the best cost.
Tapping global resources will obviously make the US economy stronger, says Gupta whose own company InfoUSA outsources both technology support and database workn to vendors in India. Gupta, who has helped Hillary Clinton and Al Gore in fund-raising efforts for their campaigns, is now involved in fund raising efforts for Senator Kerry.
In fact, Indian Americans are playing a significant role in raising funds for the Kerry campaign. In the San Francisco Bay Area alone, we have already raised almost $200,000 by now. Countrywide, I would estimate that over $5-600,000 has been raised so far.
