I, for one, was not made uncomfortable by the revelations in Richard Clarke's book.

I was simply astonished. Astonished that no action, not one move, was made by the regime of the "Former Occupant of the Oval Office, 1993-2001" to isolate and seriously target Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda, even after they had been fully apprised of the complicity in the embassy bombings in Africa, the Khobar Towers incident, and the USS Cole incident. Shooting at empty tents and aspirin factories does not count as isolating and seriously targeting bin Laden or his organization.

But more than that, Richard Clarke was NOT the driving force in collecting and analyzing the information that al-Qaeda was preparing for a really earth-shaking strike against the US. That honor has to go to an FBI field agent named John O'Neill, who first collated and integrated the pattern of communications that defined the actions and organization of al-Qaeda. O'Neill finally resigned from the FBI, after being stonewalled in the years from 1998 on, and took a job with the World Trade Center as Director of Security. He started on September 10, 2001.

O'Neill's body was found in the rubble September 12, 2001.

I have not read the Village Voice piece, though I feel I can comment regardless. I have been familiar with George Smith's work for years. I have no interest in his political leanings because he doesn't try to make them a part of his work. Smith is fairly well regarded in the IT community and has made a habit of busting frauds and fearmongers, particularly in the area of computer security. Smith (as well as Rob Rosenberger, see Vmyths.com) have brought Clarke's incompetence to light since 2000, when he claimed that a Chinese computer virus would have a devasting effect, equal to that of the Pearl Harbor attacks.

The fact that Smith turns out to be a Democrat just makes it even funnier.
