The paradox: When some of us returned from the scuffle in SEA circa 1967-71, some vacation and lodging facilities refused to accomodate our reservation requests even when supported by a valid American Express card.

The way you folks (including my Dad - Mekong Delta, 68-69) were treated was flat out wrong. I'm just ecstatic to see that the media's and national-level Dems' attempts to repeat history have been soundly rejected this time around.

Our sincere thanks for your service, Middie.

I apprecate the thanks and the thought behind it. However, what are the Democrats doing that would replicate the post-SEA dust-up response to returning GIs today? I haven't heard or seen anything of that nature. Indeed, it seems as thought the entire nation, irrespective of party, recognizes the sacrifices of the GI and the fact that he doesn't make foreign policy but is the executor of policy made by old men and women politicos. I have no gripe with the Democrats at all regarding the treatment, support or expressions aimed at the troops.

I have massive heartburn with the behavior of the Democrats regarding our troops. If you see nothing wrong with what's going on, then I presume you also had no problem with John Kerry protesting with Jane Fonda and testifying before Congress? They are aiding and abetting the terrorists by not following the old "politics end at the water's edge" adage. They provide hope to the terrorists, which leads to more attacks and more deaths/injuries. I find it appalling.

You seem to have the unique ability to combine societal conduct from 34 years ago with contemporary expressions of support for our GIs. And then, to construct out of whole cloth a fanciful and imaginary rejection of today's GIs by Democrats. That sounds like a fictional screen play to me.

To me the fiction is a politician standing before a microphone blasting an American mission this way and that, minimizing/ignoring its successes and magnifying its failures, ridiculing the hard-fought efforts of our troops - and by extension they themselves, - and then they add "But I fully support the troops."

It's hypocritical, it's insulting, and in most cases it's a flat-out lie.

Below are some examples of the "imaginary rejection" by national-level Democrats I've been "constructing."

I mean, when I voted for the war, I voted for what I thought was best for the country. Did I expect Howard Dean to go off to the left and say, "I'm against everything"? Sure. Did I expect George Bush to [expletive deleted] it up as badly as he did? I don't think anybody did.

"What I do regret is that this administration has not lived up to the standards of diplomacy set forth in the resolution," Kerry told the Des Moines Sunday Register. "The president's diplomacy has been completely lacking."

http://www.dmregister.com/news/stories/c4789004/20687439.html

Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., said the bombing should ``explode the illusions of postwar progress and stability the Bush administration continues to cling to.''

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., said: ``It is becoming increasingly clear each day that the administration misread the situation on the ground in Iraq and lacks an adequate plan to win the peace and protect our troops.''

The case for going to war against Iraq was a fraud "made up in Texas" to give Republicans a political boost, Sen. Edward Kennedy said Thursday.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/985088/posts

Rep. Jim McDermott of Washington, the Democratic congressman who went to Baghdad last year to say that President Bush would lie to the American people in order to justify war, has now accused the president of timing Saddam Hussein's capture for political ends. He told a Seattle radio interviewer Monday that American forces could have captured Saddam "a long time ago if they wanted." Asked by interviewer Dave Ross on KIRO-FM whether the capture was timed to help the president, he replied: "Yeah. Oh, yeah. There's too much by happenstance for it to be just a coincidental thing."

Well, I surmise that the meaning and implications are in the mind of the reader. Those statements are easy to disagree with. But it goes too far to place those political disagreement statements in the same category as the disdain and abuse that was heaped on the GI returning home in the 1969-72 era. If you can't or won't see the distinction with a difference, then so be it. Please enjoy your own interpretation.

Not at all. I've been to two "peace" marches recently (as a counter protester), and it's like a flashback in time, ma-a-a-an.

The American public led the way during Vietnam in comforting and motivating the enemy; now it's the Democrat politicians and hippie retreads acting in unison. There's no real difference.
