Police prepare for rush of concealed-carry applications(Ohio)

BATAVIA - With the date of Ohio's new concealed carry law quickly approaching, hundreds of people in Clermont County are gearing up to apply for permits to legally carry concealed firearms.

"We've given out almost 200 applications today already," Clermont County Sheriff A.J. Rodenberg said Monday, the first day his office made applications available. "People could come by and pick them up."

Authorities in other Southwest Ohio counties also are preparing to accommodate the new law, which goes into effect April 8.

The application can also be downloaded from the Ohio attorney general's Web site (www.ag.state.oh.us) . A passport-type photo of the applicant taken within the last 30 days and a certificate demonstrating that the applicant has had the required firearms training must accompany the application.

Applicants will also have to pay a $45 or $69 fee, depending on how long they have lived in the state, Rodenberg said. The office will accept cash, money order or certified check.

Applications will not be accepted in Clermont County until the law goes into effect, Rodenberg said.

"Everything seems to be on track," he said.

In Hamilton County, sheriff's officials are encouraging those who want to fill out an application early to download it, spokesman Steve Barnett said. The office expects to have everything ready to accept the applications when the law goes into effect.

Butler County will have the applications available on April 8. Officials there have not released plans for when they will be able to accept applications, Butler County Sheriff's Detective Monte Mayer said.

Warren County Sheriff Tom Ariss said he expects that his office will be fully functional for the concealed-carry process by the time the law becomes effective.

"The first several weeks or few months, I think, are going to be hectic," Rodenberg said.

Not a chance. Besides, it's best to brush up anyway.

I would also highly suggest taking a self defense & the law course. Something that let's you know when & when NOT to draw your firearm

The carrying of a firearm is a very serious & responsible undertaking.It behooves one to be as knowlegable as possible.

My wife & I (both CCW holders in CT) took one recently & were very surprised at what the law considers to be proper incidents. The laws are geared to protect the bad guys, not you & I.

I'm not surprised by the rush. Next time someone shoots at an Ohio citizen from an overpass... LOOK OUT !!

Thanks to both of you. I want the cc permit, so I guess I'll have to do it.

But, I want to carry primarily around my own place and other places in our county (Adams.) Mostly just for varmints and snakes and such. But sometimes you just forget you've got a pistol on you and you jump in your car and drive into town.

I was thinking "better safe than sorry."

I was out on the back 40 last summer. My neighbor has built yet but has a little campsite alongside the creek, and I had eventually walked down in that direction. Next thing I know, I'm talking to some guy with a 9mm....fortunately, it was a friend he'd said come down his place and target practice.

But I've seldom felt more naked in my life than when a stranger stood there with his 9 mm, and me with only my walking stick, and a good distance back in the woods.

I started carrying my pistol after that.

That's one mistake you can't afford to make.

The little Kel-Tec .32 (my office carry gun) in my front pocket now, is a good example. You really can & do forget you have it on you.

I wouldn't go *ANYWHERE* in Adams County, Ohio without a gun. The law on my side or not. I've had dealings with *SOME* of the locals out there that would scare any sane person. Now the advent of Meth labs has made going armed even more of a requirement...

Adams County.....a very beautiful place.

Many don't know that the Appalachian Escarpment begins here.

But it has a distinct flavor of Appalachia.

No Hatfields to speak of...but lots of McCoys. I live across the creek from "Deliverance."

I'd get one even though I don't see a need to carry it full time. I may want to conceal a gun in my car/boat or for rare occasions.
