A muslim infiltrator setting off a nuclear weapon??

On a nuclear aircraft carrier? I don't know the details, but I'd imagine there are radiation detectors all over the place, if only for safety reasons. How would a nuclear bomb go undetected? Anything sufficiently shielded to avoid detection would be HUGE and extremely heavy. How would they get it onboard?

Anyone else find it interesting that this threat coincides with the very day "The Final Countdown" is finally being released on DVD?

Ok, so if the Nimitz suddenly disappears there's no need to worry, she'll be back soon enough. Minus her CAG, an ASW helo, and a few crewmembers ... but carring a 60+ year old Sheltie.

On a nuclear aircraft carrier?

Kitty Hawk isn't a nuke ... she's one of the last two conventionally-powered carriers in the US fleet, along with Big John. But yes, I'm sure they have all sorts of radiological measuring equipment aboard ...

what in AQ's arsenal could possibly get close enough to an aircraft carrier that could destroy it?

Didn't some AQ quack make statements last week or so about AQ possessing suitcase nukes that were bought from the former Soviet Union?

Perhaps a USS Cole-like attack is in the offing.

I read it, and it scared the bejeebers out of me, that we could be so vulnerable.

I wonder why they didn't put up some planes to cover the carrier while it was being refueled? Is the captain still the captain of that carrier? Just curious...

The USS Intrepid is a short row boat ride from that proven islamic base of operations known as New Jersey, and is also within spitting distance of the WTC. Though I'd expect the attack in September when the Pub convention is in town as well.

I would guess that our carriers have nuclear weapons on board already...

Kitty Hawk isn't a nuke ...

Really? I ass-umed all the big ACs were nuclear powered. Thanks for correcting me.

Aren't we getting ready to sink a carrier as a man-made reef? Maybe we could convince the terrorists to send some suicide bombers to do it.

"There have been reports that al-Qaeda has 15-20 vessels and intends to become involved in attacks from the sea. I haven't read any reports as to exactly what kinds of vessels they have."

Maybe these attacks will be as well-coordinated and damaging as those two scuba Palestinian guys who thought they were SEALS the other day and got shot up as wild animals should.

"what in AQ's arsenal could possibly get close enough to an aircraft carrier that could destroy it?"

A (quietly) radical Moslem sailor with a small dirty bomb or suitcase bomb that he somehow managed to smuggle on board.

I mean, it's not like it is unthinkable after what that guy did already shooting his own comrades in arms.

Sorry. I misspoke. He threw a grenade.

Kill me and read my entrails: you will get information at least as accurate.

I don't think I'd make that offer...

this would result in some serious slaughter being delivered upon terrorists everywhere.

One can hope.

Anything sufficiently shielded to avoid detection...

You CANNOT shield against detection. Lead shielding may protect humans from overexposure to gamma rays, but it does not shield against sophisticated detection equipment.

In Final Flight by Stephen Coontz, terrorists got on board a carrier at port in Naples, stole nuclear devices and wired another to explode on the ship itself.

That infiltrator would have to get through some very tough Marines, with assault rifles, first.

Unless his/their MOS is weapons maintenance. Can't exclude møøselimbs from this MOS, it wouldn't be PC...
