Computer Problem - Help (Vanity)

I have a Logitec Optical mouse w/USB and PS/2 capability and my computer has 2 each ports.
In the last few weeks, my optical mouse keeps going dead, more and more frequently. If I unplug and replug it might work but lately it's getting more and more difficult for the light to come back on. I've tried using the PS/2 port, it helped for a while but now doesn't work at all. The USB port is about dead.
I plugged the mouse into an old CPU using PS/2 port and it works fine... no problem.
What's my problem and can I just change out the box that holds my mouse and keyboard? The keyboard is working OK.
Any help appreciated.

can I just change out the box that holds my mouse and keyboard? What box? Never heard of a keyboard and mouse in a box (unless you're talking about a shipping box - say it ain't so!).

The part of CPU that accepts the mouse and keyboard links.

...can I just change out the box that holds my mouse and keyboard? Well, yes, but you'll probably find it's much cheaper and easier to get a new mouse ;)

I spent $50.+ dollars on a new mouse. It's not the mouse.

The part of CPU that accepts the mouse and keyboard links. Oh, THAT box. Well, it doesn't actually "hold" the mouse and keyboard - that's what confused me.
If the mouse truly does work reliably (for more than a few minutes) on a different computer (or box, if you prefer), then it's likely the connector inside the computer. You could have the connector replaced by a friend (should cost 5 dollars plus his time).
If you want to replace the "box", then that's a whole new computer.

That's the best news I've heard. So I get a new connector and it should solve the problem? Is it something I can do myself or should I take to someone who knows... LOl

If you can handle a soldering iron and understand how to de-solder something without delamininating the circuit board, then yes you can do it.
If you've never done it before, this is not the place to start, unless you're going to trash the thing anyway.
It's POSSIBLE that it's the solder joint from the connector to the circuit board that's bad anyway, rather than inside the connector. In that case, just re-solder the thing and try it out.
But if you've never done it, don't start now.

Thanks Izzy. You've been a big help. It's much appreciated. LOL. Yes, I've done lots of soldering on Heath Kits. Built several of them. But never on a computer. :-)

Do you have an anti-virus program?
Do you keep it up to date?
Do you have a firewall (such as Zone Alarm)?
Do you keep it up to date?
I suspect you've been, er, penetrated...

I would assume you reloaded the software that came with the optical mouse. Is your mouse USB2.0 compatible? Is your computer USB port 2.0 compatible?
To: Gracey
It may not be the problem, but I suspect your power supply might be on it's last legs. My optical mouse was doing that for months, and just a few days ago, the power supply quit on me, or at least the voltage coming out of the supply dropped to a level that the entire computer won't turn on.
I realized this by pulling the power supply out and setting it on the test bench and found the power supply was emitting 7 volts instead of the usual 12 volts.
