He was one of my favorite actors. He played some deliciously evil characters, such as Nero in "Quo Vadis", Herod in "Jesus of Nazareth" and the voice of Prince John in Disney's animated "Robin Hood".

Go in peace, Mr Ustinov. You made a great many people's lives a little bit richer for your presence...
He wrote an autobiography some years ago, entitled Dear Me. I started to read it over Christmas, but left it at my aunt's house in Auckland. I'm a little young to remember the man in his prime, but from the few pages of his autobiography I read, he sounded like a most engaging fellow.

Born in London on April 16, 1921, the only son of a Russian artist mother and a journalist father, Ustinov claimed also to have Swiss, Ethiopian, Italian and French blood everything except English.....
Was part Jewish too.

I will always think of him as some sort of Roman emperor.

To quote one of his more famous roles [Nero]
"Oh, what an artist the world is losing!"

Great storyteller, too, on the old Jack Paar show, and Dick Cavett as well.

Blackbeard's Ghost was my favorite. Mom and Dad took me to the old Levi Theater downtown Enterprise AL to see that movie when I was a kid.

I loved him in Death on the Nile. I liked his Poirot every bit as much as Finney's and Suchet's.

Yes, his Nero was one of his best roles.

Sorry to hear this. In the 1980's I was standing in the small foyer of the rehearsal room building of the BBC, waiting for a friend, where they were going to rehearse Dr Who's 20th anniversary special. Someone said "Here comes Peter" and I assumed they meant Peter Davison, the star of the show. Instead, in walked Peter Ustinov, who was rehearsing another show. He was as unassuming and as "regular guy" as you'd want to see.

He narrated the most excellent documentary series "Wings of the Red Star".
Rest in peace, brother.

One of my favorite Ustinov observations is this:
"People who climb to the top of their tree are often the ones who lack the talent to detain them at the bottom."
He went on to create an example: A beautician who's not as talented as the others has time on her hands, gets involved with the beauticians' union, and eventually winds up running whole industry.
This is a Ustinov's Corollary to the Peter Principle.

I seem to recall a story from years ago that both his parents were agents for Britain's MI5-maybe someone can tell me if this is correct.
