Go on, force the refineries and oil companies to lower their prices now. Within 6 months you will learn what is worse than high gas prices ---- gas lines and rationing.

You are correct as far as you go but have failed to even mention limited supply drawn from the same pool, where the independent gets their supply and who refines it to begin with. After 30 years in the oilfield I can't tell one barrel from another, nor can anyone else.

I want competition. Not huge oligarchy trusts, which the government's recreated with all the mergers lately.

Gas Prises is series and hugh.

I agree--sounds almost as series as the time my sister got bitten by a moose. It was a hugh moose, BTW--it was so hugh that later we entered it in a 4-H contest and won First Prise.

I, for one, don't buy it. Exxonmobil makes $6.6 billion a quarter profit.

Well truth be told they send me several thousand dollars of that every quarter, along with thousands of other people.

How come when the gas station lowers his price, the other guy on the corner across from him does the same???

Right!

Especially,....when the 'same' oil/gas International Oil Company owns each gas station on all FOUR CORNERS!

(hang it up 'mom-n-pop' independents!)

(Whose International Refinery is it anyway?)

/sarcasm

Best way to reduce gas prices is to allow more refineries, break up the trusts (texas/chevron exxonmobil) and begin work on real alterantives down the road.

There's nothing outrageous about my suggestions, in fact it's good business sense.

I'm amazed that some people have the skills to breath even at the autonomic level. ;-)

Yeah, right. About 89% of earnings is upstream and 11% downstream.

The money is in producing oil, not in retail and refining margins. If not, why is the number of gas stations declining? Why hasn't there been a new refinery built in the US since 1981?

Was the winner showered with cheese prises?

And whatever you do, don't ping Arthur McGowen...

I know the money's in upstream. Downstream is basically a loss leader. A simple minded business manager will miss how they rely on each other though.

Kind of a shame.

Curmudgeon -- Nor am I inclined to chip in with a companion piece on NYMEX, exhaustion curves, replacement cost, distribution considerations, back-end costs, and/or secondary and tertiary storage (or the lack thereof).

Am I correct in guessing that you, like I, view this price level as a combination of mkt cyclics and an attempt by OPEC to interfere in this year's election?

FReegards!

Aslo, the refinery stuff is regulated out of existance basically.

Sure it's not as cost effective as pure upstream, but it's a part of the whole, and business and EPA needs to get it finally.

I can imagine the blasting I'm going to take for this........but I'm confused.

I hate the prices I've been paying for gas lately....yet in the past week they have DROPPED by between 5 and 7 cents a gallon. $1.57 this afternoon......Friday I paid $1.62....last Monday it was $1.65
