Bill to Legalize Migrant Farmworkers Gets Support

WASHINGTON - House and Senate lawmakers rallied yesterday behind legislation that would legalize as many as 500,000 illegal immigrants employed as farmworkers, but the Bush administration has yet to endorse the measure.

Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., the bill's chief sponsors, are urgently working to get the measure onto the Senate floor before the end of the year. They are trying for support from at least 60 senators. So far, the bill has attracted 54 sponsors from both parties.

It would be interesting to see Rove's numbers on this. Is it really true that he will gain more votes than he will lose? I think it is foolish from a political point of view; it is certainly a disaster from any other point of view.

The lawmakers have spent more than seven years crafting the legislation - the Agricultural Job Opportunity, Benefits and Security Act - and have assembled an unusual coalition of groups to back it. They include the American Farm Bureau, the United Farm Workers, the AFL-CIO, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Council of La Raza.

Well, it appears as though at least one racist organization, the National Council of La Raza, has come out in support of this bill. I wonder if any other racist organizations, such as the Ku Klux Klan or the White Aryan Brotherhood, will also support this bill.

I'm firmly convinced Bush would pick up more Hispanic votes by cracking down instead of pandering. The majority of Hispanic-descended citizens are sick of it and watch their wages undercut like everyone else.

I can remember when most migrant farm workers were white. At least they were in California.

I agree, at least for the ones inclined to vote Republican in the first place. I get the feeling that the GOP leadership is getting more and more out of touch with what people want - not some "conservative base" but just regular people. Most of the country has strong feelings about certain issues and not a lot of ideological motivations. This is one of those issues.

If Bush would just come out and say that he was going to close the borders he would be a shoe-in. I thought they buried this issue but they cannot leave well enough alone. One step forward and two step back.

It's worse than you know. OSHA has embraced the Council of La Raza in their Partnerships program. They want to go beyond insuring safety by providing illegals "help up the ladder of success". OSHA has never done that for citizens.

Is it a tin ear, or do they just not care a whit what you or I think? They mean to impose this on Americans whether we like it or not. Its good for agribusiness donors, even if it is a bit hard on taxpayers.
