I'm firmly convinced Bush would pick up more Hispanic votes by cracking down instead of pandering. The majority of Hispanic-descended citizens are sick of it and watch their wages undercut like everyone else.

I agree, at least for the ones inclined to vote Republican in the first place. I get the feeling that the GOP leadership is getting more and more out of touch with what people want - not some "conservative base" but just regular people. Most of the country has strong feelings about certain issues and not a lot of ideological motivations. This is one of those issues.
I am often puzzled by their tin ear for this.
If Bush would just come out and say that he was going to close the borders he would be a shoe-in. I thought they buried this issue but they cannot leave well enough alone. One step forward and two step back.
