US Preparing for Military Draft in Spring 2005

The current agenda of the US federal government is to reinstate the draft in order to staff up for a protracted war on "terrorism." Pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills S 89 and HR 163) would time the program so the draft could begin at early as Spring 2005 --Reinstatement of the draft

Dear Friends and Family,

I urge you to read the article below on the current agenda of the federal government to reinstate the draft in order to staff up for a protracted war on "terrorism."

Pending legislation in the House and Senate (twin bills S 89 and HR 163) would time the program so the draft could begin at early as Spring 2005 -- conveniently just after the 2004 presidential election! But the administration is quietly trying to get these bills passed NOW, so our action is needed immediately. Details and links follow.

If voters who currently support U.S. aggression abroad were confronted with the possibility that their own children or grandchildren might not have a say about whether to fight, many of these same voters might have a change of mind. (Not that it should make a difference, but this plan would among other things eliminate higher education as a shelter and would not exclude women -- and Canada is no longer an option.)

Please send this on to all the parents and teachers you know, and all the aunts and uncles, grandparents, godparents.... And let your children know -- it's their future, and they can be a powerful voice for change! Please also write to your representatives to ask them why they aren't telling their constituents about these bills -- and write to newspapers and other media outlets to ask them why they're not covering this important story.

The Draft*

$28 million has been added to the 2004 Selective Service System (SSS) budget to prepare for a military draft that could start as early as June 15, 2005. SSS must report to Bush on March 31, 2005 that the system, which has lain dormant for decades, is ready for activation. Please see website: http://www.sss.gov/perfplan_fy2004.html to view the SSS Annual Performance Plan - Fiscal Year 2004.

The Pentagon has quietly begun a public campaign to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots nationwide.. Though this is an unpopular election year topic, military experts and influential members of Congress are suggesting that if Rumsfeld's prediction of a "long, hard slog" in Iraq and Afghanistan [and a permanent state of war on "terrorism"] proves accurate, the U.S. may have no choice but to draft.

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article5146.htm

Congress brought twin bills, S. 89 and H.R. 163 forward this year, entitled the Universal National Service Act of 2003, "To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons [age 18--26] in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes." These active bills currently sit in the Committee on Armed Services.

Dodging the draft will be more difficult than those from the Vietnam era remember. College and Canada will not be options. In December 2001, Canada and the US signed a "Smart Border Declaration," which could be used to keep would-be draft dodgers in. Signed by Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, John Manley, and US Homeland Security Director, Gov. Tom Ridge, the declaration involves a 30-point plan which implements, among other things, a "pre-clearance agreement" of people entering and departing each country. Reforms aimed at making the draft more equitable along gender and class lines also eliminates higher education as a shelter. Underclassmen would only be able to postpone service until the end of their cur-rent semester. Seniors would have until the end of the academic year.

conveniently just after the 2004 presidential election!

Also posting to local (Oklahoma) topics because this was sent to me by a home-grown leftist.

This was sent to me by someone who believes this stuff. It caught me totally flat footed and I have no information to prove otherwise. The word "Progressive" in the name of the outfit is proof of something, of course, but if anyone can help refute this stuff I'd appreciate it. Any information on "Progressive Alliance" or "Center for Progressive Justice" would be appreciated, also.

Thanks.

Isn't that goofball congressman Charlie Rangel the guy who's been pushing for the draft for nearly a year now?

This looks like a campaign to make the Republicans look bad. The reality is that the bills mentioned are sponsored by Democrats only.

Draft will only cause more manpower shortages. Turnovers would be high and valuable training will be wasted when their enlistment is up. A all-volunteer military means better pay, benefits and morale.

Exactly! OTOH, the war on terrorism is only beginning. I, personally, don't have a problem with the draft, with options for nonmilitary service. One more strike on the US by these animals and I suspect that Americans (and possibly most of the world) will begin to realize that this war is as serious as any we have ever been in.

So yes, the RATS are trying to embarrass the Republican administration, but, I'd like to see their bluff called!

Frankly i just wish the liberals would make up their minds one way or the other.

Back in the months leading up to the Iraq fight the liberals thew fits because George Bush was going to draft them at any given second. (never mentioned by the administration and proved false)

Next Charlie Rangle started calling for the draft. (He was heroic for doing so) Hillary Clinton has also said the draft was needed. (also heroic)

As far as the Bush administration calling for a draft i have no clue, but it clearly proves to liberals how evil he is.

The way i see it democrats want a draft because the anti war crowds just aren't as big as they could be with a draft. In other words democrats would happily send soldiers to die if it makes Bush or republicans look bad. In fact i think this may be why they voted to go to Iraq in the first place.

The nice thing about conspiracy theories is that if they don't come true they can be molded into an even larger conspiracy thats part of the vast cover up.

This is total nonsense...everyone knows that the last thing the Army wants is the draft. Everyone from the Joint Chiefs to the Recruiting Division has adamantly said that we are stronger and more lethal with an all-volunteer Army than at any time in our history. Then men and women want to be there, and have years of training under their belts, which draftees would not have nor have time to acquire.

Draft reinstatement was first proposed by Charles Rangel (D-NY). Tell the libs to go fly a kite, we wouldn't want their sorry, emotionally-unstable butts in our Army anyway.

This isn't about making Republicans look back. It's about whipping up public opinion against foreign involvements. It's an incredibly cynical move.

There is nothing wrong with a draft.

It is better than using the National Guard for long-tern deployments. Essentially a lot of guard units have been "drafted". The new draft is for targeted groups only-people with special skills like computer programming and medical personnel.

There will need to be a wider draft only if there are not enough volunteers, but there does have to be legislation in place just in case there are not enough volunteers.

Aha! So THIS explains the nonsense my "stuck-in-the-sixties" brother was ranting about earlier this week. He was wailing that "George Bush is gonna reinstate the draft and they'll draft my kids." The odd part is that his "kids" are 30, 32, and 22. The 30 y.o. is his daughter and the 22 y.o. has an arm deformity which would certainly keep him out of any draft.

Anything I said to point that out he just dismissed. "They'll run out of young ones and then come after MY kids....blah blah blah."

Did I mention that I am "the normal one?"

Good campaign material.

Elect Kerry and the RATS will reinstitute the draft!

Well, it's true though. We have a plan. Every male identified as leftist will be trained in the "Enemy At The Gates" style of leftist military fighting. One carries the bullets, one carries the rifle. When the one with the rifle gets shot, the one carrying the bullets picks up the rifle and shoots at the enemy.

Honestly, the easiest response to this issue is to tell all these people to vote REPUBLICAN, and stop the draft! Democrats want to kill your children using the draft.

My husband said the US House and Senate have to approve the draft. Since Republicans have both the house and senate...they will knock the draft bill down.
