Yeah but Canada has better access to broadband and it's a hell of a lot cheaper too...you did know that they test most of this newer stuff in Canada first before it comes to the USA right? Thats why they have cellular intenet service at 115200Kbps, but it is restricted to 56K when Canadians bring their cel phones down to the USA...
To: xrp
Sure I do. Never said I didn't want broadband.

Yep. Lots of 2nd and 3rd world countries have high speed internet access in the remote areas of their country, paid for at their expense.
It is in the process of happening in iraq at our expense.
My brother in law will be going to iraq soon as a consultant on this project.
there was actually a "news" story a week or so ago which featured some peasant family crouching in their hut in the mountains of iraq, and some GI's were connecting their new TV.
You can believe it or not.

Well, I was talking more about how their government works than about their access to the internet.

Yup... Just what we need: The government making sure that each and every American can download porn at the highest speed possible!

"We ought to have universal, affordable access to broadband technology by the year 2007," Bush said in a speech in Albuquerque, New Mexico. "And then we ought to make sure that as soon as possible thereafter consumers have plenty of choices..." Will he slash regulations or will he spend a hundred billion dollars that helps nobody but the incumbents of both parties?
To: CasearianDaoist
Anyway, I think that he is talking about easing certain FCC trestrictions on the "last mile" and promoting broadband wireless with tax incentives. I think his track record says otherwise.
To: BigSkyFreeper
No, but your desire to stay in the sticks overrides your desire for broadband, LOL! LOL!

Basically all governments are a joke...Just a bunch of rich guys that think they know whats best for us...
To: xrp
Not really. I know of some places in Canada out in the sticks where they have wireless cable TV/internet, T1 internet connections, DSL, and cable modem access. No reason why it shouldn't happen in this country. ISDN and dialup is all but phased out in Canada for newer, emerging technologies

Sorry, It is true! Comcast is the only provider in our area. They have agreements with townships throughout the state.
They are the only ones providing true broadband capability.
Verizon offers DSL, but it is slower than cable access. Comcast has no competition.
To: Redcloak
I'm against government involvement just as much as the next person. There's no excuse for multibillion dollar companies having to run to the government, aside from tax incentives, for help just to get everyone wired for speed.

I'm not knee-jerk opposed to this idea. Over a decade ago, I was for the USPS providing everyone in the USA with a fixed email address.
