"Kerry said he is running to "restore people's trust that what we say, we mean — that the things that we talk about in a campaign are not promises to be broken, they are promises to be kept.""

I suppose a stunt like that might attract people who think their political "leaders" should engage in juvenile bathroom-type humor. To others, I think on balance it makes him look like a fool.

I agree this is much worse than his joke at the dinner. This was a big thing when we took over the hotel. I believe our troops pulled up the tiles, one of first things. To the Arab world this is the biggest insult to our Commander in Chief. They are insane or worse.

Image of Bush the Elder, Long a Doormat in Baghdad Hotel, Dismantled By U.S. Soldiers
http://abcnews.go.com/wire/World/ap20030411_334.html#photocap

U.S. soldiers visited the battered Al-Rashid on Thursday night wielding hammers and chisels, and dug out the intricate tile mosaic of the former president that was used for years as a state-sponsored insult.

In its place, they laid a portrait of Saddam Hussein.

Taking shoes to the face is not exactly a compliment in any culture, but in the Arab world it's a particular slam. Pointing the soles of one's feet at someone is a grave insult.

Saddam persoanlly picked the Al-Rashid for the insult to Bush senior. The hotel was heavily trafficked by foreign guests

Ping lists please ---

This goes beyond humor in the world of politics. President Bush is our Commander in Chief, and this photo is now all over the world.

This is the lead on Drudge

He even has a (not very clear) photo of the picture that Saddam had in Baghdad to jog folks memories.

While doing other research recently, I came across a Baltimore Sun front page of June 2, 1967, with this caption under a photo of people on shore waving to a warship underway:

IN SUEZ CANAL -- Egyptians brandish shoes at the USS Intrepid on her way to the Red Sea. The gesture is apparently imitative of Kruschchev's shoe-thumping at the UN. __UPI Telephoto

I guess caption writers were not as familiar with the true meaning of the sole of the shoe as we are today.

By the way, the headline of the article next to this photo - center front of the paper under the banner was

US WAR TOLL HEAVIEST YET FOR ONE WEEK
313 Americans Killed; Plane Losses Set Record --Saigon, friday, June 2, (AP)

What else should we expect from this low-life dirtball.

Consider the source.

There is actually some precedent to this on the left. Back in my college days (during the Reagan administration), I bought a subscription to "The Nation". (Please don't flame me, I have since seen the error of my ways!). One of the "perks" for subscribing was a "Ronald Reagan doormat". It was actually more like a "Ronald Reagan washcloth", which should have clued me in immediately to the credibility of "The Nation". I still have that thing. I recently packed it up before I moved.
